As the Kansas City Chiefs prepare for the NFL Draft,Patrick Mahomes isn’t staying quiet. The three-time Super Bowl champion has delivered a clear message to the franchise: bring back the deep passing game. Reflecting on the team’s Super Bowl loss and the inconsistency that plagued their offense throughout the season, Mahomes made it known that returning to explosive, downfield plays is a top priority.
“If there was one bright spot in the Super Bowl, it was us airing it out in the second half,” Mahomes said. “We didn’t hit enough of those throws all year, and it finally caught up to us.” His comments, made during a recent press conference, signal that the league’s most dynamic quarterback wants to reintroduce vertical threats to the Chiefs‘ playbook.

The Chiefs’ offense needs a spark
While Mahomes continues to carry the offense, the supporting cast around him is shifting. With Travis Kelce approaching the twilight of his career and young receivers still developing, Kansas City has lacked the firepower that once defined its offense. This offseason, the team has made some adjustments, but the draft now presents a crucial chance to give Mahomes the tools he’s asking for.
Deep passes don’t just generate highlight reels, they open up the entire playbook. “When we’re hitting those shots, it helps everything,” Mahomes emphasized. “The run game, the short game, even our rhythm.” Defenses have begun crowding the line of scrimmage, daring the Chiefs to beat them over the top. Mahomes is ready to take that challenge, but he needs the right personnel.
Kansas City faces key draft decisions
The Chiefs‘ front office has rebuilt the offense before, and they may have to do it again. Mahomes has proven he can adapt, but for Kansas City to return to championship form, they’ll need to listen to their star. With limited cap space and a competitive AFC, every draft pick counts.
Expect the Chiefs to seriously consider wide receiver prospects who can stretch the field. If Kansas City wants to stay ahead of the curve-and ahead of the Bengals, Ravens, and Bills-they’ll need to arm Mahomes with speed, separation, and sure hands.
The message is simple: let Mahomes cook deep again.
