Alijah Arenas, the 18-year-old basketball prodigy and son of former NBA star Gilbert Arenas, has shown remarkable improvement after being involved in a serious car accident early Thursday morning in Los Angeles.
The incident occurred around 5 a.m. when Arenas‘ Tesla Cybertruck veered off the road, striking a tree and a fire hydrant. The crash resulted in a fiery scene, with flames engulfing the vehicle and water from the ruptured hydrant flooding the area.

A bystander, who witnessed the crash, described the situation as dire but acted swiftly to rescue Arenas from the burning vehicle. “I remember hearing banging on the car window, but I couldn’t see anything because the smoke was so thick,” the rescuer recalled.
“That’s when I realized someone was inside. I tried to break the window, but it wouldn’t give. Then I saw one of the windows was cracked just enough and we used everything we had to bend it and pull him out. The car was on fire. We just knew we had to get him out.”
Arenas was transported to a local hospital in stable condition and placed into a medically induced coma due to smoke inhalation.
Remarkably, he did not suffer any broken bones. Within 24 hours, his family reported significant progress, noting that he was awake, intubated, and able to communicate by writing on a piece of paper to inquire about the well-being of others involved in the accident.
Arenas’ future at USC
Arenas, a senior at Chatsworth High School, had recently committed to play basketball at USC, reclassifying to graduate in 2025.
He is considered one of the top prospects in the 2025 class, known for his scoring ability and versatility on the court. The basketball community has rallied around him, with USC head coach Eric Musselman expressing support and fans sending messages of encouragement.
The Arenas family has expressed deep gratitude to the Good Samaritan who rescued Alijah and to the medical personnel providing care. They continue to request privacy during this challenging time and appreciate the outpouring of support from the community.
As Alijah Arenas continues his recovery, his family remains hopeful and optimistic about his future both on and off the court.
