The Kansas City Chiefs‘ latest recruit has the seal of approval from Patrick Mahomes as Josh Simmons heads to the Arrowhead Stadium after being selected 32nd overall in the 2025 NFL Draft.
The Chiefs are looking to fight back and regain their crown after suffering Super Bowl defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles on February 9, in a timid display that saw them crushed 40-22 by Jalen Hurts.
And one of the areas they could be looking to beef up is their offensive line in order to give their quarterback more protection after he was sacked six times at the Caesars Superdome and a total of 47 times through the entire 2024/25 campaign.
That’s why they’ve picked up Simmons from the Ohio State Buckeyes, who won the NCAA National Championship game against Notre Dame on January 21. Standing at 6ft5in and weighing 310 pounds, he’s a big guy.
However, there is a bit of a risk to him after he suffered a patella tendon rupture in October 2024 and thus it’s currently unclear how his recovery will impact his budding NFL career.
So how does the three-time Super Bowl MVP feel about the new addition? He seems upbeat from his X.com (formerly Twitter) post, where Mahomes posted a sunglasses face emoji; often used to translate a relaxed vibe. Fans quickly picked up on it.
One user wrote, “Trust the captain.”
A second added, “Our guy approves.”
And a third commented, “QB1 is happy.”
Can the Chiefs tame Simmons?
It turns out that his patella injury wasn’t the biggest concern about the young talent and the majority of teams were willing to look past it to bring him on board. However, questions remain about his personality.
“Several teams agree,” Jeremy Fowler told ESPN. “Josh Simmons had best tape of any OT last year.
“And they aren’t very concerned with recovery on the torn patella tendon. More of the concern is maturity/character. But he’s going to the ideal, veteran-laden place.”
But fortunately, the Chiefs is full of seasoned heads such as Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Chris Jones. All of these names, and many more, can teach him how to use his personality to level up his game without becoming arrogant.
