Austin FC looks to build on their solid start to the season when they travel southeast to square off against the rebounding Houston Dynamo on Saturday in a Copa Tejas match in the Bayou City.

The Verde (5-3-1, 16 points) have been one of the surprise sides in MLS. Austin’s most recent outing was a 1-0 home win over the defending league champion LA Galaxy.

Brandon Vazquez scored in the 81st minute for Austin to produce the game’s lone goal and make amends for being stopped on a penalty kick in the 70th minute. Goalkeeper Brad Stuver stopped four shots to earn his league-leading fifth clean sheet of the season.

The Verde had to play the final four minutes of stoppage time a man down after Brendan Hines-Ike was sent off with a second yellow card for poor sportsmanship.

“For me, it was the most complete game that we’ve played so far at home,” Austin coach Nico Estevez said. “We’ve still got a lot to work on. So we’ve just got to keep stepping onto the pitch every single day in training, give 100 percent and make sure we keep improving.”

The Dynamo (1-4-4, 7 points) have struggled through their first eight games, while being outscored 14-8. Houston has a three-match unbeaten streak that included a win at home over Los Angeles FC before draws at the LA Galaxy on April 12 and at home against Colorado in their most recent outing on April 19.

Ondrej Lingr scored an equalizer in the sixth minute of second-half stoppage time to allow Houston to split the points. It was the designated player’s initial match with his team upon being signed from SK Slavia Prague last month. Anime Bassi had the first goal of the contest for the Dynamo.

Houston coach Ben Olsen said Lingr provides just the offensive infusion his team needed.

“(Lingr) did exactly what he needed to do,” Olsen said “It’s nice to have a guy get on the end of something. I don’t think we’ve had that in a while. It’s one of the things we liked about him coming in. We needed someone to stretch the line and be a guy in the box who is fearless, that wants to get it. This will give us a dimension that we’ve needed.”

Austin captured two out of the three matchups between the teams last year, including one in Houston.

Grading the Broncos’ draft

Feb 27, 2025; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Texas defensive back Jahdae Barron (DB04) during the 2025 NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Tanner Pearson-Imagn Images Grade: C Best Pick: CB Jahdae Barron, No. 20 Overall What We Liked: Barron is a stud. His extreme versatility along with high-end tackling skills and coverage ability should make him a cornerstone of that defense for a while. In an era that's shifting more toward the idea of "positionless football," the Broncos are charging forward into the future with a defensive back that is the shining example of that philosophy. I also think Sai'vion Jones could work in quickly as a third pass rusher. Not Sure About: In theory, adding a couple skill players for Bo Nix should work for Denver, but these guys don't have the juice. RJ Harvey does not have […]

Nashville sets franchise mark in 7-2 win over Chicago

Apr 26, 2025; Nashville, Tennessee, USA; Nashville SC forward Sam Surridge (9) and midfielder Edvard Tagseth (20) celebrate a goal from a penalty kick in the first half against Chicago Fire at Geodis Park. Mandatory Credit: Casey Gower-Imagn Images Sam Surridge scored four goals and Nashville set the franchise mark for largest margin of victory Saturday, beating the visiting Chicago Fire 7-2 Hany Mukhtar added two goals and one assist for Nashville, while Jeisson Palacios scored, as well. Nashville (5-4-1, 16 points) opened the scoring in the 14th minute after Chicago defender Jack Elliott was called for a foul on Jacob Shaffelburg, resulting in a penalty kick. Surridge powered the ball down the middle of the goal to give Nashville an early 1-0 lead. Nashville doubled its lead in the 22nd minute when defender Palacios got on the right end […]

Grading the Patriots’ Draft

Mar 1, 2025; Indianapolis, IN, USA; University of Georgia offensive lineman Jared Wilson (OL49) answers questions at a press conference during the 2025 NFL Combine at Indiana Convention Center. Mandatory Credit: Jacob Musselman-Imagn Images Grade: A+ Best Pick: C Jared Wilson, No. 95 Overall What We Liked: Lots of rock-solid picks building in Mike Vrabel's first year as the head coach. The offensive line is molding into more of a unit than a series of disparate parts, the Patriots have a new running back in TreVeyon Henderson who can hopefully carry the workload. Kyle Williams gives QB Drake Maye one more weapon. This feels like a draft driven by logic and smart team-building. Not Sure About: It was a little early for Craig Woodson for my liking. Woodson has trouble run-stopping and struck me as more of a developmental player […]

Grading the Buccaneers’ draft

Dec 28, 2023; Orlando, FL, USA; Kansas State cornerback Jacob Parrish (10) celebrates an interception against NC State in the fourth quarter at Camping World Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Jeremy Reper-Imagn Images Tampa Bay Buccaneers Grade: A- Best Pick: CB Jacob Parrish, No. 84 Overall What We Liked: The Buccaneers are really ready to fix what didn't work for them last year, investing heavily in a barren cornerback room and new edge rotational players. Cornerback Benjamin Morrison (No. 53) and Parrish could be a scary duo on the outside and slot, respectively. Emeka Egbuka (No. 19) brings a young face to an aging wide receiver room and could easily become the next Chris Godwin. Not Sure About: Edge David Walker (No. 121) does not have extensive FBS experience and did not shine at the all-star games, so it feels like a […]

Grading the Chiefs’ Draft

Mar 1, 2025; Indianapolis, IN, USA; Utah State wideout Jalen Royals (WO38) during the 2025 NFL Combine at Lucas Oil Stadium. Mandatory Credit: Kirby Lee-Imagn Images Grade: A- Best Pick: WR Jalen Royals, No. 133 Overall What We Liked: The Chiefs managed to solve their offensive tackle problem thanks to the fall of Josh Simmons, which feels reminiscent of the Trey Smith pick from 2021. As usual, the Chiefs are playing to consensus, picking up talented fallers such as Royals and Ashton Gillotte, who have the production and athleticism to become quick starters. The Chiefs are sticking to the strategy that turned them into perennial Super Bowl contenders. Good stuff. Not Sure About: That Omarr Norman-Lott pick feels like a disaster waiting to happen. It's hard to trust a player who isn't taking a majority of the snaps for his […]
