Chukwuebuka Godrick doesn’t look like your typical NFL signing. For starters, he didn’t play high school or college football. He grew up in Nigeria, played basketball in Lagos, and only recently started pancaking pass rushers. But now, he’s got a locker in Kansas City-and Andy Reid seems all in.
The 6’5″, 293-pound offensive tackle joined the Chiefs this week through the NFL’s International Player Pathway program. He’s raw, sure-but last preseason, he held his own in 21 pass-blocking snaps without giving up a single pressure. That kind of performance sticks with coaches. Especially Reid, who’s made a career out of turning overlooked names into difference-makers.

The Chiefs are betting on development over depth
This signing wasn’t just about upside. It came the same day the Chiefs cut ties with tight end Anthony Firkser and linebacker Shaun Bradley-two reliable, if unspectacular, veterans. In total, Kansas City released or waived seven players. It’s a clear signal that Reid is tweaking more than just depth charts.
Godrick’s journey hasn’t been spotless. He and teammate Wanya Morris were hit with a misdemeanor marijuana charge earlier this year, but inside the building, the team sees it as part of the learning curve-not a dealbreaker.
What makes this move even more interesting? The whispers out of Los Angeles that Jim Harbaugh’s Chargers didn’t see enough in Godrick to offer him a deal. The Chiefs did. With only $13.6 million in cap space, per Spotrac, Kansas City is getting creative-and Reid has always thrived in those conditions.
Godrick’s IPP exemption lets the team keep him without using a roster spot, a low-risk move with potential upside. And in the trenches, that kind of developmental flexibility matters. “The O-line group here is amazing,” Godrick told local reporters. “I just want to grow and help where I can.”
The Chiefs are still contenders. But if you’re paying attention, they’re also quietly rebuilding parts of their foundation. Not with flashy names-but with players like Godrick, who show up every day and earn their shot.
