La semifinal de San Mamés se cortó por el peor de los patrones: el de la duda y la sospecha. Jugadores, técnicos y aficionados del Athletic no querían creer lo que acaban de ver y sentir. Hay una mano de Garnacho antes de la jugada del penalti y es gracioso que después de pitar ese penalti en el segundo tiempo no hayan pitado una clara falta por lo mismo a Maroan, aunque haya sido fuera del área” destacó Iñaki Williams. En 2012 Athletic regresó a unas semifinales de Europa League. El sorteo le emparejó con el Sporting Portugal y la vuelta también se iba a jugar en San Mamés. La vieja Catedral fue decisiva. El 26 de abril, los leones cargaron de emoción al mundo rojiblanco porque venían obligados a remontar un 2-1.
