V letech 1973 až 1982 Mass ve formuli 1 absolvoval 105 závodů. Jediné vítězství vybojoval v roce 1975 ve Velké ceně Španělska s vozem McLaren. Zastínila ho nehoda krajana Rolfa Stommelena, při které zemřelo pět diváků a traťových komisařů.
Na stupních vítězů byl Mass ještě sedmkrát. V šampionátu skončil nejlépe na šestém místě v roce 1977. O rok později při nehodě během testů v Silverstonu utrpěl četné zlomeniny a poranění plic. V roce 1982 byl účastníkem havárie v belgickém Zolgeru, po níž zemřel Kanaďan Gilles Villeneuve. Po další vážné nehodě ve Francii o tři měsíce později Mass se závoděním ve formuli 1 skončil.
