Travis Hunter signed off from college football by winning the Heisman Trophy and also a new round of controversy when his relationship with fiancée Leanna Lenee became an unexpected focal point for the wrong reasons. However, now she hits back.
As the Colorado Buffaloes star collected the prize for the most outstanding player in the 2024/25 NCAA season, Lenee found herself at the center of harsh public criticism when a video clip showed her not immediately standing during his name announcement.
She had to be encouraged by Deion Sanders, before a later clip showed her seemingly frustrated that the 21-year-old Hunter was signing photographs and completing fan engagement activities.
As a result, she began the subject of a viral backlash as online trolls cast judgment and speculation about her motives and demeanor, going as far as to accuse her of chasing money and fame instead of romance.
Leanna deactivating her social media accounts to escape the vitriol but now she’s begun to re-engage and defend herself, most notably through a feature in Hunter’s YouTube documentary, Travis Hunter Draft Day: The Documentary.
She points out that the receiver, now with the Jacksonville Jaguars in the NFL, taught her the mental qualities she needed to weather the storm.
“The number one thing Travis has taught me throughout his college career is to be resilient,” Lenee said. “”No matter what people said about him. [No matter] how many times he got injured. [Travis Hunter would] get back out there and do his thing every single time.
“No matter how much hate he received, anything people told him he couldn’t do. He would still go do it.
“So, he probably taught me how to be resilient and to just believe in myself and not listen to what other people say about me or what I’m doing.”
When is Travis Hunter getting married?
Despite these repeated waves of scrutiny, the couple has stood firm and their relationship continues to deepen, with Hunter announcing he had asked for his girlfriend’s hand in marriage in February 2024, when he was with the Buffaloes.
Now over a year on, and around three years into dating, the pair are due to get married after successfully navigating high-profile attention, personal attacks, and the pressures of public life.
ESPN reports that Travis Hunter is getting married in May 2025, although the precise date is yet to be revealed to the public. The news broke shortly after he was picked second by the Jaguars in the 2025 NFL Draft, just behind Cam Ward.
The quarterback went to the Tennessee Titans and played for the Miami Hurricanes, producing 4313 passing yards for 39 touchdowns and surrendering seven interceptions from 514 plays.
