Aztécký stadion hostil finálové zápasy MS v letech 1970 a 1986. Na šampionátu v roce 2026, který Mexiko uspořádá se Spojenými státy americkými a Kanadou, se na stadionu odehraje pět zápasů včetně zahajovacího 11. června.
„Postupujeme s renovačními pracemi na stadionu, aby mohl fungovat dalších 40 nebo 50 let. Respektujeme jeho odkaz, ale také musíme zlepšit podmínky pro fanoušky,“ uvedl ředitel stadionu Felix Aguirre.
Úpravy stadionu se soustředí na splnění standardů FIFA a budou zahrnovat nové hráčské šatny, vylepšené VIP sekce a sedadla v místech, kde dříve byly lóže a skyboxy. Podle původních plánů by se kapacita stadionu měla zvýšit na 90 000 lidí.
