Lee Sansum, a former bodyguard for Princess Diana, passed away at 63 after a heart attack at his home. His wife, Kate, shared the sad news online, writing, “Since meeting in 1998, Lee Sansum has been my soul mate, hero and most amazing man in my world… I’m devastated to share that he is no longer with us.”
Sansum, who worked for Mohamed Al-Fayed in 1997, had protected Diana and her sons, Prince William and Harry, during a Saint Tropez holiday just weeks before her tragic death. He always believed he could’ve saved her if he’d been on duty that night.

Diana died in a car crash in Paris on August 31, 1997, with her boyfriend Dodi Fayed and driver Henri Paul. They were speeding through the Pont de l’Alma tunnel, trying to escape paparazzi, when Paul, who had been drinking, lost control and hit a pillar. The only survivor was bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones, who was badly hurt.
Sansum told The Sun in 2022, “It could have been me in that car.” He explained that he and Rees-Jones drew straws to decide who would work that night, saying, “When I learned they were not wearing seatbelts in the crash, I understood why they didn’t survive.”

Samsun believed he could’ve saved her
Sansum insisted that Diana would still be alive if he’d been there. He said, “It was standard practice for the family to wear seatbelts. It was an order sent down from the boss, Dodi’s dad Mohamed Fayed. Dodi, in particular, hated wearing seatbelts, and I always insisted on it.”
He believed that if he’d been in the car, he would’ve made sure everyone buckled up, possibly preventing the tragedy that shocked the world. Diana, only 36 at the time, was loved by millions, and her death left a huge void.
Sansum, nicknamed “Rambo” by Diana, spoke fondly of her, calling her an “amazing woman.” She even sent him a letter after their Saint Tropez trip, saying, “William, Harry, and I very much wanted to write and thank you for taking such good care of us… we all had a magical ten days.” Fans on X shared their sadness over Sansum’s passing, with one writing, “Lee Sansum’s belief he could’ve saved Diana is so heartbreaking.”
