O brasileiro João Fonseca virou a página. Em entrevista coletiva após a eliminação em Roland Garros, o tenista já tem definidos os próximos objetivos. Ele disse que quer chegar ao top 40 e ser um cabeça de chave no Aberto da Austrália.
— Quero jogar os grandes torneios, estar nas chaves principais, jogar todos os ATP 500. Talvez chegar no top 40. No final do ano, o meu objetivo é ser um cabeça de chave na Austrália. Eu sei que precisamos de tempo e resultados, mas esse é meu objetivo pessoal — disse João na coletiva de imprensa em Paris.
Aos 18 anos, João alcançou a terceira fase de um Grand Slam pela primeira vez, sendo que jogou num torneio desta importância apenas pela segunda vez na carreira. Ele estreou em janeiro deste ano, quando passou pelo qualificatório e foi até a segunda fase da chave principal do Australian Open.
No sábado, foi eliminado pelo número 5 do mundo, o britânico por Jack Draper, por 3 sets a 0 — parciais de 6/2, 6/4 e 6/2.
— Na Austrália eu não sabia nem como era direito jogar cinco sets. Eu já tinha treinado muitas vezes, mas pensava: “Será que eu aguentaria?” Acho que fisicamente estou bem hoje. Durante todos os jogos que eu já fiz aqui, até mesmo na Austrália, eu me senti bem fisicamente depois. Acho que agora preciso ajustar a parte mental do jogo — explicou.
Para conseguir ser cabeça de chave em um Grand Slam, o brasileiro precisa estar entre os 32 melhores tenistas do mundo. Atualmente ele ocupa a o 55.º lugar. Após Roland Garros, ele terminará acima da posição de número 59, sua melhor da sua carreira até então. João começou o torneio em Paris na 65.ª colocação.
