Devětadvacetiletý Barkov dovedl mužstvo potřetí za sebou do finále a bude s ním proti Edmontonu usilovat o obhajobu Stanley Cupu. V základní části nasbíral v 67 zápasech 71 bodů (20+51), vyhrál 56,5 procenta vhazování z 1026 a zblokoval 54 střel.
Na Selkeho trofej, kterou získal v roce 2021 a loni, byl rodák z Tampere nominován počtvrté během pěti sezon. Letos triumfoval s 1363 body s velkým náskokem před klubovým spoluhráčem Samem Reinhartem (837) a Anthonym Cirellim z Tampy Bay (828). Na první místo zařadilo Barkova 96 ze 191 hlasujících. Vícekrát v historii získali ocenění jen Patrice Bergeron (6) a Bob Gainey (4).
„Je to pro mě velké překvapení,“ prohlásil Barkov, jemuž předali obě ceny pacienti dětské nemocnice. „Vůbec jsem něco takového neočekával. A když pak přinesli ještě další trofej, tak mě to docela vzalo. Je to opravdu pocta,“ dodal.
Lídr Panthers, který obléká dres s číslem 16, daruje za každý svůj gól dětské nemocnici 1600 dolarů, za asistenci polovinu. Od roku 2019 tato částka vyšplhala už na 420 000 dolarů (9,2 milionu korun).
Na King Clancy Trophy nominuje po jednom hráči každý z týmů. Vítěze vybírá komise složená z komisionáře NHL Garyho Bettmana a bývalých vítězů King Clancy Trophy a dříve udělované NHL Foundation Player Award.
