Trojnásobná grandslamová šampionka Sabalenková postoupila mezi čtyři nejlepší na Roland Garros podruhé, dál zatím nedošla. Před dvěma lety ji v semifinále vyřadila Karolína Muchová.
Loňskou olympijskou šampionku z Paříže Čeng Čchin-wen porazila za necelé dvě hodiny a oplatila jí necelé tři týdny starou porážku ze čtvrtfinále v Římě. O pět let mladší Číňanku zdolala posedmé z osmi vzájemných zápasů. Čeng Čchin-wen doplatila na 31 nevynucených chyb.
„Byl to opravdový boj. Netušila jsem, jak jí mohu prolomit servis a dostat se zpět do prvního setu. Nezačala jsem dobře a jsem ráda, že jsem nakonec našla svůj rytmus a vyhrála,“ řekla na kurtu Sabalenková.
Finalistka letošního Australian Open doháněla v úvodní sadě manko 2:4. V osmé hře ale brejk soupeřce oplatila, a přestože neproměnila za stavu 6:5 setbol, ve zkrácené hře zvítězila 7:3. Ve druhé sadě se už Bělorusce dařilo na returnu lépe. Od stavu 3:3 získala tři hry po sobě a využila první mečbol.
„Myslím, že jsme tu všichni z jednoho důvodu. Každá chce tu krásnou trofej. Jsem ráda, že mám šanci být v dalším semifinále a zvládnout to lépe než minule. Věřím, že až antuková sezona dospěje do konce, budu na sebe hrdá,“ doplnila Sabalenková.
