Nyní osmatřicetiletý Pistorius vlétl na sportovní nebe jako kometa. Vyhrával závod za závodem. Pro své protézy nohou z uhlíkových vláken dostal přezdívku podle známého filmu Blade Runner. Jenže 14. února, tedy v den svatého Valentýna, zastřelil svou přítelkyni, devětadvacetiletou modelku Reevu Steenkampovou, která byla za zamčenými dveřmi koupelny. Pistorius se opakovaně hájil tím, že si ji spletl s vetřelcem.
S odvoláními ale u jihoafrických soudů neuspěl. Nejdříve vyfasoval pět let za zabití z nedbalosti. Tribunál však jeho čin přehodnotil na vraždu, což mu vyneslo třináct let a pět měsíců. Nakonec si celý trest neodseděl, protože byl podmínečně propuštěn. Ve vězení pobýval s Krejčířem a měli spolu i hrát fotbal…
Jeho podmínečné propuštění po zhruba osmi a půl letech za mřížemi a sedmi měsících domácího vězení vyvolalo v zemi, která je proslulá násilím páchaným na ženách, ostrou reakci.
Pistorius už může znovu svobodně vycházet. Přesněji řečeno za přesně stanovených podmínek. Proto se také mohl zúčastnit triatlonového závodu v Durbanu, který leží na jihoafrickém pobřeží.
Mluvčí jihoafrického ministerstva vězeňských služeb Singabakho Nxumalo uvedl, že Pistorius dostal povolení k účasti na závodě Ironman 70,3 Durban. „Nedošlo k žádnému porušení bodů jeho podmínečného propuštění,“ řekl Nxumalo pro zpravodajský web Netwerk24.
Conrad Dormehl, Pistoriusův právník, pro agenturu Reuters zase uvedl: „Toto je součástí jeho návratu do společnosti. I když si účast na akci obzvlášť užíval a zdá se, že ho triatlon uchvátil, zatím se k návratu k závodnímu běhání nechystá.“
Server Netwerk24 poté zveřejnil fotografii Pistoriuse jedoucího na kole, na které je vidět jeho charakteristické tetování a protézy nohou.

Výsledky zveřejněné online společností SportSplits pak potvrdily, že sportovec celým jménem Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius se závodním číslem 105 se umístil na 555. místě mezi všemi účastníky závodu Ironman a na třetím místě v kategorii hendikepovaných sportovců. Trasa zahrnovala 2 km plavání, 90 km jízdy na kole a 21 km běhu – celkem 112,3 km. Tedy 70,3 mil, cože bylo uvedeno v oficiálním názvu triatlonového podniku.
Pistorius býval kdysi idolem sportovního světa. Stal se průkopníkem, neboť se zasazoval o to, aby hendikepovaní mohli na významných sportovních akcích soutěžit se zdravými účastníky. Na třech paralympijských hrách v Aténách, Pekingu a Londýně získal šest zlatých medailí a na olympijských hrách v Londýně v roce 2012 dokonce soutěžil v závodech pro osoby bez hendikepu. O rok později změnil jeden výstřel celý jeho život. A s pověstí vraha se mu bude těžko začleňovat zpět do společnosti.
