John Spytek clears the air on Tom Brady connection at Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders are entering a new era, and among the fresh faces reshaping the franchise are general manager John Spytek and minority owner Tom Brady.

Given their shared history at Michigan in the late 1990s, it was widely assumed that Brady played a part in bringing Spytek aboard.

But Spytek is setting the record straight-there was no behind-the-scenes push from the seven-time Super Bowl champion.

“Everyone says we were teammates at Michigan. Yeah, we were teammates,” Spytek said on the 3 & Out Podcast.

“But I mean, we hadn’t really spoken in 20 years. So it wasn’t like this was my friend walking into the building.”

The comment puts to bed speculation that Brady, now involved in ownership, influenced the Raiders’ front-office hiring decisions.

While the two did briefly reconnect during Brady‘s stint in Tampa Bay-where Spytek worked as the Buccaneers’ director of player personnel-their relationship has largely been distant since college.

Spytek takes control as Raiders look to bounce back

Now tasked with rebuilding a struggling Raiders team, Spytek is focused on turning around a franchise that stumbled to a disappointing 2024 season.

That campaign led to sweeping changes, including the hiring of veteran coach Pete Carroll and a roster overhaul aimed at regaining competitiveness in the AFC West.

One of Spytek‘s boldest offseason moves was trading for quarterback Geno Smith, reuniting him with Carroll after their time together in Seattle.

In the draft, the Raiders also secured running back Ashton Jeanty with the No. 6 overall pick, a player many believe could anchor their backfield for years to come.

Despite Brady‘s minority ownership status, Spytek emphasized that he alone is steering the front-office vision. His comments suggest there’s mutual respect between the two but not a close personal bond or collaborative decision-making.

The clarity matters, especially in a franchise known for its dramatic shifts and strong personalities. Brady’s presence in the ownership group inevitably draws attention, but it’s Spytek’s strategy that will shape the team’s future.

A fresh chapter in Vegas with eyes on the future

Spytek‘s rise from Michigan walk-on to NFL executive has been driven by scouting acumen and front-office savvy.

After cutting his teeth in various personnel roles with franchises like the Eagles, Browns, and Broncos, he made a name for himself in Tampa Bay-contributing to a Super Bowl roster and helping the team land Brady in 2020.

While their paths now cross again in Las Vegas, Spytek is eager to forge his own identity separate from Brady‘s legendary shadow.

Brady, for his part, continues to make appearances and offer insight, but remains largely behind the scenes in his new role.

His presence may influence culture, but it’s the moves made by Spytek and Carroll that will ultimately define whether the Raiders are able to return to playoff contention.

With a revamped roster and a seasoned coach now at the helm, Spytek‘s vision for the Raiders is beginning to take shape. The Brady connection may be a headline grabber, but as Spytek made clear-it’s not the story that matters most.

Prospect Watch: How every MLB team’s No. 1 prospect has fared so far in 2025

Believe it or not, the midway point of Major League Baseball's season is just around the corner. Between that and the upcoming amateur draft -- CBS Sports' coverage of which began yesterday with our top-30 ranking -- this feels like the opportune time to offer a progress report on how some of the game's best young players are faring so far in 2025.With that in mind, below I've offered thoughts and analysis on each organization's player who I ranked No. 1 in their offseason prospect lists. Got it? Good, let's get down to business. It hasn't been a fun few years for Lawlar. He debuted late in 2023 and didn't perform well over a 14-game cameo. He then missed most of last season because of thumb and hamstring injuries. Lawlar only recently returned to The Show, but he went 0 for 19 […]

Re-enter the NFL Draft? How Shemar Stewart could use CBA loophole to create nightmare situation for Bengals

When it comes to rookie contracts in the NFL, there isn't usually too much negotiation involved. Thanks to the collective bargaining agreement from 2011, every draft contract is essentially slotted due to the rookie wage scale, which means each player knows how much they're going to make as soon as they get drafted. What this means is that negotiating a rookie contract shouldn't be that difficult, well, unless you're the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals seem to invent new ways to frustrate their fans (and players) every year, and that's once again happening this year. The team's first-round draft pick, Texas A&M pass rusher Shemar Stewart, showed up at OTAs, but he didn't participate in a single workout this spring because he still hasn't signed his contract. He also showed up for the first two days of minicamp during a whirlwind 48 hours […]
