Mary Lou Retton, former Olympic gymnast, has spoken out regarding her recent arrest for driving under the influence and has stated that she is committed to self-improvement.
Retton shared her heartfelt comments on social media and admitted she made an error on her arrest. She further added that she takes full responsibility for her actions. “What happened was completely unacceptable,” she said. With regards to her family and fans, Retton apologised saying, “I make no excuses. To my family, friends and my fans: I have let you down, and for that, I am deeply sorry.” The athlete intends to take away lessons from the incident and make real changes to her life.

Hand-cuffed to the police station
Retton’s legal matters were wrapped up the same day with a court appearance where she pled no contest to a first time non aggravated dui charge. The court issued a $100 fine, which is serious but makes this a relatively minimal legal outcome.
The police cuffed her on May 17 in West Virginia. They had stopped her car and thought she had been drinking. They said she was not talking right and could smell the drink on her.
They saw a wine bottle in the car and said she did not pass a field test. Her lawyer, Edmund J. Rollo, wants us to give her some room as she tries to fix her life and work after what happened.
This tells us even known people have hard times and must own up to their acts. Retton is open about the mess and says she will learn from it. This shows she can face tough stuff well.
What penalties exist in the US for DUI?
Let’s look at DUI rules in the U.S. What happens if someone drives drunk changes by place, but it often means paying fines, not being able to drive, having to learn about alcohol limits, and sometimes, jail.
If you have never been caught before, you might have to pay up to a few thousand dollars, lose your license for up to a year, and maybe get probation. If it is not your first time or you hurt someone, you could get a bigger fine or stay in jail longer.
In West Virginia, where they caught Retton, you start with a $100 fine if it’s your first time with DUI. You might also lose your license and have to join a class about drinking. She didn’t get a big penalty since she had no past offenses.
