Angel Reese may have posted one of her more complete stat lines of the season on Friday, but the numbers didn’t tell the full story – and they certainly didn’t lift the Chicago Sky to a much-needed win.
In a lopsided 88-70 defeat to the Atlanta Dream, it wasn’t just the scoreboard that told a troubling tale. It was how her own teammates treated her.
Angel Reese’s puffy eyes show recent struggles
Reese managed 12 points on 4-of-10 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds, adding three assists and a steal in 32 minutes.
But her struggles finishing around the rim – especially on layups – once again became the focus, as clips of her failed shot attempts went viral after the final buzzer.
One viral post on X summed up the mood: “Angel Reese plays like Ewing when the MonStars took his talent.”
Watching her missed layup late in the second quarter, many fans agreed.
Even Sky management has hinted that Reese‘s offensive game has to evolve, and Friday’s performance gave little reason for optimism.
Teammates’ body language speaks volumes
What stood out more than the stat sheet was the body language of Reese‘s teammates.
Several times during the first quarter, she worked to establish position in the post, actively calling for the ball. Instead of feeding her, the Sky guards swung the ball away or simply let the possession fizzle out – once leading to a shot clock violation.
The implication was clear: after repeated misfires, especially on simple finishes, her teammates are hesitant to involve her in the offense.
That distrust may stem from the opening minutes, where Reese‘s first field goal attempt set the tone – a badly missed shot that looked more forced than fluid.
On the other side, Brittney Griner had a quiet but effective night for Atlanta. In just 26 minutes, she tallied seven points on minimal shooting volume, hauled in four rebounds, and blocked three shots.
Her +24 plus-minus reflected her steady presence, even as she continued to avoid questions about a previous viral outburst that many interpreted as being directed at Caitlin Clark.
Chicago’s loss dropped them to 2-7 on the year, and while Reese‘s rebounding and defensive hustle remain assets, her scoring inefficiency is fast becoming a liability – one her teammates increasingly appear unwilling to work around.
The Sky now face the Connecticut Sun on Sunday, desperately looking for answers.
For Reese, the biggest challenge may no longer be the opponents – it may be winning back the trust of those sharing the floor with her.
