While Shedeur Sanders and the Cleveland Browns quarterback competition gets most of the national media coverage, a battle is brewing in New York Giants camp that NFL fans should keep their eyes on. The Giants front office has put together a hodgepodge of three quarterbacks with different playing styles, with hopes that one of them will stand out from the rest.
Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston have the advantage due to being veterans who have found success in previous stops, but Jaxson Dart is the talented rookie that the team traded up to draft in the first round in April. Since being drafted, Dart has done everything right off the field, and his confidence is translating to the gridiron. While he’s still not the favorite to be under center for the Giants in Week 1, there is absolutely a pathway for him to take the job.
Russell Wilson is taking most starter reps at Giants camp, but Jaxson Dart isn’t far behind
According to Dan Duggan of The Athletic, Wilson was the clear-cut starter during Thursday’s practice, taking every snap during 11-on-11 periods. While that doesn’t bode well for Dart, it might not be the end of the world.
“Dart was the second quarterback in most periods, although he and Winston ended up with a fairly even split of second-team reps. Dart took one rep with the starters in a 7-on-7 period early in practice, but otherwise worked exclusively with the backups.“
Dart being the second quarterback on Thursday continues a trend that’s been apparent through OTAs. He appears to be ahead of Winston, which means he only needs Wilson to falter either in practice or the preseason to make a move and try to jump him ahead of Week 1. Even if Wilson ends up as the starter for the start of the season, his leash may be short, and Dart will be waiting in the wings as QB2.
New York Daily News reporter Pat Leonard recently mentioned that Wilson has been underwhelming overall at OTAs. The defense has gotten the better of the offense when he’s been in there. As for Dart, he has impressed with his touch on certain throws. It seems like it’s only a matter of time before Dart is the guy.
