NBA Europa pode desafiar hegemonia da Euroliga; executivos explicam projeto

A final deste ano da NBA conta com o canadense Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, armador do Oklahoma City Thunder, como uma das principais atrações nos duelos contra o Indiana Pacers. Bronze mundial em 2023, o canadense foi eleito aso 26 anos o MVP — melhor jogador — da temporada do melhor basquete do mundo, fazendo o prêmio parar, pela sétima vez consecutiva, nas mãos de um atleta nascido fora dos Estados Unidos. A sequência, que começou com o grego Giannis Antetokounmpo e passou pelo sérvio Nikola Jokic e pelo camaronês naturalizado americano Joel Embiid, expõe a internacionalização da produção de talentos para a NBA, que, por sua vez, virou os olhos para a Europa como nunca antes.

A NBA e a Federação Internacional de Basquete (Fiba) anunciaram em março a intenção de criar uma nova liga profissional masculina na Europa. O continente, que soma 33 medalhas olímpicas (contando com Rússia e União Soviética), já conta com um forte ecossistema de torneios nacionais que culminam na Euroliga, o segundo principal torneio de times do mundo. Mas os americanos têm a ambição de abrir um novo espaço.

— Estamos pensando em montar uma liga com 14 a 16 times, com um certo número de equipes permanentes e um certo número de cidades. Depois, (realizar) uma competição aberta para todos os outros clubes poderem participar das ligas de elite — disse Mark Tatum, vice-comissário da NBA, no último dia 2. — Reforçar o princípio de que, não importa em que liga esteja, você pode jogar na elite. Queremos que isso faça parte desta liga daqui para frente.

Estratégia ousada

O plano não está fechado e depende da entrada de investidores e do próprio interesse da comunidade, mas a NBA Europa tem um direcionamento claro: atrair clubes já existentes e relevantes nos cenários nacionais. Além disso, cogita um sistema de mérito, com rebaixamentos e acessos, algo que não existe no esporte americano.

Apesar da aparente concorrência com a Euroliga, Tatum contou que executivos do torneio europeu estiveram em reunião com a NBA e a Fiba no fim de maio, em Genebra, na Suíça. Acredita-se que, ao atrair times de escolas mais fortes, como Espanha, Grécia, Alemanha e Turquia, será possível promover um intercâmbio e fazer jogos até nos EUA. A NBA também cogita o envolvimento da Basketball Champions League Europe, torneio continental da Fiba que divide espaço com a Euroliga no continente, no sistema que idealizam para a nova competição.

Há ainda a promessa de investimento nas estruturas europeias para produção de técnicos, árbitros e, sobretudo, jogadores — o brasileiro Tiago Splitter acabou de ser anunciado como assistente no Portland Trail Blazers após um ano de experiência no Paris Basketball, da França. Uma das principais estrelas do esporte hoje é Luka Doncic, armador esloveno do Los Angeles Lakers, revelado pelo Real Madrid e selecionado pelo Dallas Mavericks com apenas 19 anos. Se, antes, os drafts — seleção anual de jogadores — eram protagonizados por jovens das universidades americanas, há cada vez mais um olhar para os outros continentes.

— Não há dúvida de que o nível de talento internacional, em todas as esferas do jogo, está em seu ponto mais alto. Na medida em que o basquete e a NBA continuam crescendo globalmente, é natural que o nível na liga também continue a aumentar — disse ao GLOBO Troy Justice, vice-presidente sênior da NBA e head de Operações Internacionais de Basquete. — Seguimos comprometidos em desenvolver o esporte em escala global, proporcionando aos jogadores aspirantes os recursos, os treinamentos e a visibilidade necessários para que possam maximizar seu potencial.

Os últimos dois drafts tiveram franceses como primeiras escolhas: em 2023, Victor Wembanyama foi selecionado pelo San Antonio Spurs e, em 2024, Zaccharie Risacher foi o nome da vez no Atlanta Hawks.

Esta temporada da NBA se iniciou com um recorde de 125 jogadores estrangeiros, vindos de 40 países dos seis continentes. O Canadá, terra de Shai, facilitado pela proximidade com os EUA, lidera com 21. Mas os países europeus já somam 61 atletas. Em janeiro, a liga fez dois jogos da temporada regular em Paris, dentro da iniciativa dos seus Global Games: os Spurs, de Victor Wembanyama, enfrentaram o Indiana Pacers, time do camaronês Pascal Siakam, campeão em 2019 com o Toronto Raptors.

— Chegamos a um ponto inédito. A NBA está fazendo um bom trabalho abrindo (esse espaço). Espero que o que estamos fazendo, ganhando MVPs, campeonatos, sendo rostos de franquias de mercados pequenos e gigantes, seja visto por jovens da Europa, do Brasil, da África. As crianças podem ver e pensar: “eles conseguiram, nós também podemos”. Acredito que, quanto mais isso acontecer, mais global o jogo vai ficar — celebrou Giannis Antetokounmpo em entrevista ao GLOBO.

E o Brasil?

O projeto, todavia, não impactará na ideia de expansão doméstica da NBA, que hoje conta com 30 franquias. Conforme apurado pelo GLOBO, o foco está apenas na Europa, e na manutenção de organizações como a Basketball Africa League (BAL), na África. Em termos de competições, o Brasil ainda não está no radar.

Tatum afastou a possibilidade de jogos de temporada regular no Brasil, pela falta de “uma quadra de nível internacional” em São Paulo — o Rio de Janeiro já recebeu partidas de pré-temporada na década passada. Porém, o torcedores seguem sendo contemplados com lojas oficiais da liga e a realização da NBA House.

O evento no Parque Villa-Lobos, na capital paulista, é a maior ativação da liga fora dos Estados Unidos para assistir aos jogos da final. Independente da duração da série melhor de sete, o evento com mais de 5 mil m² vai até o dia 22, oferecendo apresentações musicais, produtos exclusivos, quadra ao ar livre com opções especiais de comida e bebida, e até encontros com jogadores atuais e aposentados. Outra atração será a presença do Larry O’Brien, troféu da NBA, e que ficará exposto no espaço. Os ingressos são comercializados no site www.nbahouse.com.br.
