Šestatřicetiletý Spaun ovládl US Open při svém druhém startu na turnaji. „Nikdy bych si nepomyslel, že tu jednou budu držet tuhle trofej,“ řekl Spaun, jenž minulou sezonu zakončil na 119. místě světového žebříčku s jediným titulem z PGA Tour ve sbírce. „Ale vždycky jsem měl touhy a sny. Nikdy nevíte, kde máte hranice. Prostě se snažím být ten nejlepší golfista, jakým mohu být,“ řekl Spaun po vítězství.
Finálové kolo přitom pro Spauna nezačalo ideálně a na prvních šesti jamkách zapsal pětkrát bogey. Po pauze se ale vzpamatoval a v mokrých podmínkách na rozdíl od řady soupeřů uspěl. Na předposlední jamce zahrál 287 metrů dlouhou ránu přímo na green a posunul se do vedení, na závěrečné 18 jamce pak předvedl nejdelší putt turnaje z takřka 20 metrů a pečetil svůj triumf.
