Apesar do gosto amargo do empate contra o Benfica após abrir 2 a 0 no placar, os dois gols marcados pelo Boca Juniors na estreia no Mundial de Clubes da Fifa quebraram uma escrita de quase 18 anos em confrontos entre sul-americanos e europeus em competições oficiais. A última vez em que um clube da América do Sul vazou duas vezes um rival do Velho Continente foi em 2007, na final do Mundial daquele ano, em outro duelo com desfecho azedo para os argentinos, que foram derrotados por 4 a 2 pelo Milan.
O Boca, aliás, esteve perto de interromper uma sequência indigesta para as nações vizinhas. Desde 2012, quando o Corinthians venceu o Chelsea por 1 a 0 na final do Mundial e sagrou-se campeão, um sul-americano não consegue bater um europeu.
De lá para cá, foram sete confrontos oficiais, todos pelo torneio da Fifa. Ao todo, foram seis derrotas e dois empates, já considerando as igualdades entre Palmeiras e Porto (Portugal), neste domingo, pelo grupo A do Mundial da Fifa, e o placar entre Boca Juniors e Benfica.
O Boca também foi o primeiro sul-americano a estar na frente do placar em relação a um europeu desde 2012. Em todo o período, o Palmeiras havia sido o único a marcar um gol neste tipo de confronto: em 2021, quando perdeu a final para o Chelsea por 2 a 1.
O empate em 2 a 2 pela primeira rodada do grupo C do novo torneio criado pela Fifa teve gols de Miguel Merentiel e Rodrigo Battaglia pelo Boca. Angel Di Mária descontou de pênalti, também no primeiro tempo, e Otamendi, de cabeça, decretou a igualdade na reta final do confronto.
Boca e Benfica dividem, assim, o segundo lugar do grupo — o Bayern de Munique (Alemanha) é o líder disparado, após ter goleado o Auckland City (Nova Zelândia) por 10 a 0. Ainda haverão mais seis jogos entre times dos dois continentes nesta fase de grupos. Entre eles, o encontro entre Boca e Bayern, na próxima sexta-feira (20), às 22h, pela segunda rodada do grupo C.

Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton, playing through an injury, endured an awful night in Game 5 of the NBA Finals as Oklahoma City Thunder took a 3-2 lead in the series to move within one win of their first NBA title.Haliburton missed all six of his attempted field-goal shots while ending up with four points, seven rebounds and six assists in 34 minutes as the Pacers lost 120-109 in Oklahoma City.
