A World Surf League confirmou, com exclusividade ao GLOBO, nesta terça-feira, que os surfistas Tatiana Weston-Webb e Gabriel Klaussner foram escolhidos como wildcards da etapa brasileira do Championship Tour, que acontece em a partir do dia 21 de junho, em Saquarema. Como convidados, a WSL convidou Arena Rodriguez e Peterson Crisanto.
Com o anúncio, os atletas ganham vaga direta no evento principal, onde enfrentarão a elite do surfe mundial nas ondas de Itaúna. Ser wildcard em uma etapa do circuito significa receber um convite especial da organização para competir entre os principais nomes do ranking, mesmo sem estar classificado por pontos.
Geralmente, esse convite é destinado a talentos locais, atletas em recuperação de lesão, que já fizeram parte do tour ou jovens promessas.
A decisão de escolha do evento pela Tatiana tem relação com sua conexão com Brasil. A gaúcha, criada no Havaí, é um dos principais nomes da história do surfe feminino brasileiro. Com dupla cidadania, começou a competir no circuito mundial em 2015, ano em que foi eleita “Rookie of the Year”.
Sua primeira vitória em uma etapa do Championship Tour (CT) veio em 2016, em Huntington Beach. Em 2018, optou por representar oficialmente o Brasil, com o objetivo de disputar os Jogos Olímpicos — decisão que lhe rendeu o carinho da torcida brasileira e um novo patamar na carreira.
Na disputa em Paris-2024, em Teahupo’o, no Taiti, Tati escreveu seu nome na história do esporte: conquistou a medalha de prata, a primeira do Brasil no surfe feminino olímpico. Em março de 2025, anunciou uma pausa nas competições para cuidar da saúde mental e recuperar-se do desgaste acumulado nos últimos anos de tour e preparação olímpica.
Outro wildcard pela etapa é Gabriel Klaussner, natural de Ubatuba (SP). Se destacou no surfe ao conquistar o título do ranking final do Circuito Banco do Brasil de Surfe em 2022, no Qualifying Series (QS) da World Surf League (WSL).
WSL wildcards
Convidado da WSL, Peterson Crisanto, nascido em Matinhos (PR), despontou no surfe profissional aos 18 anos, quando chegou à final do QS em Zarautz, em 2012, sendo derrotado por Gabriel Medina. Visto como parte da geração promissora ao lado de Medina e Miguel Pupo, teve apoio inicial da Billabong e subiu rapidamente no ranking do QS, alcançando a 48ª posição em 2014. No entanto, após perder o patrocínio, enfrentou dois anos difíceis competindo apenas no Brasil, sem recursos para disputar o circuito internacional.
Retornou ao QS em 2017, mais maduro e com um estilo de surfe explosivo, marcado por aéreos progressivos e forte base técnica. Em 2018, venceu o QS 10.000 de Ballito, somou bons resultados e garantiu a classificação para o Championship Tour (CT). Estreou na elite em 2019 com momentos marcantes, como sua atuação no Pipe Masters, no Havaí. Desde então, segue competindo no circuito de acesso, ainda em busca de retomar espaço entre os melhores do mundo.
Arena Rodríguez Vargas, surfista peruana de 19 anos, é uma das principais promessas do surfe sul-americano. Em 2024, venceu três das quatro etapas do circuito Pro Junior da WSL South America. Em 2025, ficou em 3º lugar no Mundial Júnior da WSL nas Filipinas, resultado que lhe garantiu apoio do Instituto Peruano do Esporte
