Macht die Liga den Klubs damit ein Geschenk?
Die Premier League hat offiziell ihren Spielplan veröffentlicht, und in England wird wild über die ersten Spiele diskutiert. Viel überraschender ist aber ein anderes Detail: Der „Boxing Day“ in seiner bisherigen Form fehlt!
Damit ist der zweite Weihnachtsfeiertag gemeint. Der wird in England seit dem viktorianischen Zeitalter so genannt – nach den Geschenkschachteln, die Bedienstete an diesem Tag erhielten. Traditionell verbringen englische Fußball-Fans ihn im Stadion oder vor dem Fernseher.
Denn: In der Premier League wurde an diesem Feiertag immer gespielt!

Beendet die Liga diese beliebte Tradition jetzt? Klar ist: Kein Team soll nach den Feiertagen zweimal innerhalb von 48 Stunden spielen müssen. Der 18. Spieltag ist angesetzt auf den 27. Dezember. Bis zum 30. Dezember soll der 19. Spieltag absolviert werden.
In einem Statement heißt es dazu: „Im Einklang mit unserer Verpflichtung, über Weihnachten und Neujahr eine größere Ruhezeit zu gewähren, wird kein Verein aufgefordert, die Spielrunden 18 und 19 in weniger als 48 Stunden zu spielen.“
Andere europäische Top-Ligen sind zur gleichen Zeit in der Winterpause. Die Bundesliga startet in diese kurz vor Weihnachten, um dann meist gegen Ende Januar den Spielbetrieb wieder aufzunehmen.
Beschwerden in England gab es schon lange. Die Anforderungen an die Spieler sind hoch in den Wintermonaten. Eine richtige Pause über Weihnachten kann es durch den „Boxing Day“ nicht geben.

Aber: Der Spielplan ist im Dezember immer noch eng. Am 20. Dezember wird noch gespielt, spätestens am 27. geht es dann weiter. Und es gibt Entwarnung für Fans.
Einzelne Partien werden wahrscheinlich trotzdem an Weihnachten stattfinden. Darüber entscheiden allerdings die Sender, die die Spiele übertragen.
Von der Liga heißt es dazu: „Die Spiele der 18. Runde (27. Dezember) können auf den Boxing Day verschoben und live übertragen werden.“
