Luis Guevara, an infielder in the Baltimore Orioles’ minor-league system, has died after being involved in a jet ski accident Sunday near Lido Key in Sarasota, Fla., the team said Wednesday morning. He was 19.
“Luis was a beloved member of our organization, and we are devastated following his tragic passing. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and teammates and we ask for their continued privacy during this difficult time,” Orioles general manager Mike Elias said in a statement.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission told CNN that investigators found four people were thrown into the water as a result of two jet skis colliding “head-on.”
The Orioles confirmed that multiple minor-league players were involved in the incident, but none required hospitalization as a result of the accident.

“On Sunday afternoon, some of our players were involved in a jet ski accident in Sarasota, Florida,” the organization said in a statement earlier this week. “Due to the circumstances, Monday and Tuesday’s FCL games have been postponed. For the privacy of our players and their families, we will not share additional details at this time.”
Guevara was signed as an international free agent out of Tinaco, Venezuela, in January 2023. He appeared in 30 games this season, his first in the United States, including 24 with Single-A Delmarva, four with the FCL Orioles and four with Double-A Chesapeake.
Multiple players offered their condolences on Instagram.
“A warrior left us,” Orioles minor-leaguer Simon Leandro commented in Spanish.
“We love you wherever you are,” minor-leaguer Andy Fabian wrote in Spanish.
