Embora a superioridade técnica do Real Madrid-ESP sobre o Al Hilal seja evidente, a incerteza por trás da estreia de Xabi Alonso no comando merengue e de Simone Inzaghi no comando saudita gerou uma expectativa diferente para o jogo. Real Madrid chegou a abrir o placar, mas não conseguiu manter o resultado contra um Al Hilal mais ofensivo do que o esperado e que propôs um jogo duro para o gigante espanhol. Com gols de Gonzalo Garcia e de Rubens Neves, de pênalti, o jogo terminou em 1 a 1, com Fred Valverde perdendo um pênalti nos acréscimos.
Al Hilal surpreendeu ao adiantar a marcação e pressionar o Real Madrid na saída de bola, desde o início do jogo. A equipe chegou a ter uma boa finalização de fora da área com o meia Milinkovic-Savic, mas que parou nas mãos do goleiro Courtois.
Já o atacante Marcos Leonardo teve a chance de abrir o placar, mas chutou para fora aos 10 minutos. Pouco depois, aos 18 minutos, Renan Lodi conseguiu superar o goleiro belga e abrir o placar, mas estava em posição irregular.
No entanto, o lance incendiou a equipe saudita, enquanto o Real Madrid não conseguiu encaixar o seu jogo contra o clube saudita, mas sofria.

Na volta do segundo tempo, no entanto, Real Madrid entrou no ritmo que um mundial pede com as mudanças propostas por Xabi Alonso.
