Before becoming the legendary cornerback we all know today, Deion Sanders-now famously known as “Coach Prime,” and formerly as “Prime Time”-played quarterback in high school. He insists that this early experience under center gave him a unique perspective on the game, helping him understand how defenses think and allowing him to anticipate them with precision. This, he says, became a defining edge in his career, enabling him to dismantle defensive schemes and become a key weapon for every team he played on.

Understanding both sides of the game-offense and defense-helped shape Sanders into someone capable of optimizing performance across the board. His ability to read both mentalities gave him an unmatched grasp of the gridiron’s chessboard. Notably, his first steps as a coach were on the offensive side of the ball, calling plays for the high school team at Trinity Christian, where his sons Shilo and Shedeur played.
That early coaching experience gave Sanders a full-field vision of football, allowing him to build teams designed to dominate opposing defenses.
Shilo Used to Make Deion Nervous
Deion opened up about his days as a high school quarterback when explaining why he initially wanted both of his sons to follow that same path-until Shilo began getting under his skin.
“You know, I was a quarterback my whole life. Both of them (Shilo and Shedeur) actually played quarterback until Shilo started getting on my nerves,” Deion said.
He explained that Shilo refused to follow the plays being signaled from the sideline, opting instead to trust his own instincts and call his own plays. That defiance didn’t sit well with Deion, who quickly grew frustrated and disillusioned.
“I said it’s over, son,”Deion added.“You calling your own plays, and I can’t do that. I’m signalling in the plays, you call it what you want to do.”
Those early clashes and diverging visions led to a major shift. Today, Shilo is a cornerback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and is expected to start this season. “He (Shilo) is so happy in Tampa, man. I am so happy for him.”
A Special Father’s Day for Coach Prime
Now that both of his sons have made it to the NFL, Deion understands that their journeys must now be their own. The “Coach Prime” legacy may have opened the first few doors, but the lessons instilled from childhood will be what guide them forward through the league.
Just a few days ago, during the Father’s Day celebration, Shilo posted a heartfelt message to his father on social media:
“Has anyone ever told you you are just a great dad? You’re a great guy. Best coach ever. Best coach dad ever. You know what? You’re getting something from Father’s Day.”
