The Dallas-Fort Worth sports scene has endured a tough stretch but cope could be on the horizon as Paige Bueckers and Cooper Flagg could rescue the city from its miserable run in 2024/25.
With the NBA’s Mavericks parting ways with star Luka Doncic, the WNBA‘s Wings sitting at the bottom of the standings, and the NFL’s Cowboys facing continued playoff frustration, fans have had little to celebrate.
However, a glimmer of hope has emerged as the 23-year-old Bueckers is quickly becoming a symbol of promise, and she’s keen to be involved in what could be another game-changing moment for Dallas sports as well.
“Yeah, I’m planning to be there, so be fun to support them there as well,” Paige said, confirming she will attend the Mavericks’ watch party for the 2025 NBA Draft on June 25.
Can Flagg and Bueckers transform Dallas sports?
Her presence connects two of the city’s most high-profile basketball franchises and unites their hopes for renewal as the Mavs prepare to pick up the Duke Blue Devils‘ Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA Draft.
The 6-foot-9 Duke forward known for his versatility and high basketball IQ, is seen as a transformative player and the one who could replace Doncic, after the Slovenian was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers for Anthony Davis.
Though Bueckers and Flagg have never played together, their simultaneous emergence in Dallas represents a rare alignment of talent in a city that desperately needs it.
“Yeah, that will be really cool,” Paige added, of Flagg ending up in Dallas. “Obviously highly anticipated being Cooper.
“But again, just exciting times in Dallas for all the franchises and organizations.”
The buzz could be much like that of Bueckers for the Wings, as she produced a standout college career at the UConn Huskies, capped by a national title run, and now leads the WNBA team in their 2025 season.
She has quickly adjusted to the professional level and is currently averaging 17.7 points and 5.7 assists per game, shooting 47.2% from the field, with her breakout moment being a 35-point performance against the Phoenix Mercury.
Meanwhile, Flagg enters the league with comparisons to legends like Scottie Pippen, known for his all-around game and defensive prowess as he aims to kickstart a new era for the franchise which reached the NBA Finals in 2023/24.
With both Cooper and Paige in the spotlight, Dallas fans are being given reason to believe in the future of their teams. Now it’s just time for the Cowboys to step it up at the AT&T Stadium too.
Meanwhile Bueckers will next be in action on June 20 in a massive game against the Connecticut Sun, who are just one win ahead with a 2-10 record. The clash will take place at the Mohegan Sun Arena and offers the wings a chance to move away from the foot of the WNBA standings.
