Jahrelang ging es bei den Niners Chemnitz von Jahr zu Jahr nur eine Richtung – bergauf!
Diese Saison kam bei den Sachsen zum ersten Mal Unruhe rein. Eine holprige Saison in der Easycredit Basketball-Bundesliga endete früh im Viertelfinale. Dann setzte sich auch noch Kapitän und Identifikations-Figur DeAndre Lansdowne (36) völlig überraschend Richtung Rostock ab.

Der zweithöchste europäische Wettbewerb mit 20 Teams ist der Unterbau der privatwirtschaftlich organisierten Königsklasse, der Euroleague. Die 13 Anteilseigner der Euroleague (darunter der FC Bayern) würdigten damit die Arbeit der Chemnitzer der letzten Jahre.
2024 hatten die Niners den unterklassigen FIBA Europe Cup gewonnen. In der abgelaufenen Saison starteten sie in der Champions League; anders als im Fußball gilt die im unübersichtlichen Gewirr der internationalen Basketball-Wettbewerbe nur als drittbeste Liga.
EuroCup: Zusätzlicher BBL-Start-Platz: Niners Chemnitz werden in Europa befördert!
Um dafür sportlich gewappnet zu sein, holen die Chemnitzer Aufbauspieler Kaza Kajami-Keane (31) zurück!
Der kanadische Nationalspieler trug 2023/24 wesentlich zum Gewinn des Europe Cups bei. Danach wechselte er zum serbischen Erstligisten Spartak Subotica. Niners-Boss Steffen Herhold: „Wir sind überglücklich, dass es mit der Rückkehr geklappt hat. Er wird mit seinen sportlichen und menschlichen Qualitäten eine echte Verstärkung sein.“

Neben den Niners treten weiterhin auch Ratiopharm Ulm und die Veolia Towers Hamburg im EuroCup an. Damit sind erstmals sogar drei deutsche Vertreter dabei.
Da es für die Teilnahme keine harten sportlichen Kriterien gibt, wurden die Türme auch als Dreizehnter der BBL-Hauptrunde zum fünften Mal in Folge eingeladen. Grund: Die Liga schätzt den Großstadt-Standort und das Potenzial in der Hansestadt.
„Wir sind sehr glücklich“, sagt Towers-Boss Marvin Willoughby. „Die Plätze im EuroCup sind wie jedes Jahr heiß begehrt gewesen. Ich denke, dass wir in den vergangenen vier Jahren bereits deutlich unter Beweis gestellt haben, dass wir sowohl organisatorisch als auch sportlich eine Bereicherung für den Wettbewerb darstellen.“
