The Dallas Mavericks are showing no signs of hesitation about who they plan to select with the first overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Following a standout workout session with Cooper Flagg, the franchise appears even more convinced that the Duke freshman is their future cornerstone.

Flagg has been widely viewed as the top prospect in this year’s draft class since the start of his lone college season, where he consistently dominated both ends of the floor. With scouts praising his versatility, basketball IQ, and competitive edge, teams across the league were hoping for the chance to land him. But in a surprising twist of draft lottery fate, it was Dallas who jumped to the No. 1 spot-despite having less than a two percent chance.
That stroke of luck came shortly after the Mavericks were heavily criticized for dealing superstar Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers. General manager Nico Harrison came under fire for the move, which many saw as a franchise-altering risk. But the front office quickly began redirecting its focus toward the future, and Flagg has become the centerpiece of that vision.

Flagg‘s recent pre-draft workout with the Mavericks reportedly left the team thoroughly impressed. According to sources close to the organization, the Duke forward showcased not just his athleticism and polished skill set, but also his high motor and leadership qualities.
Dallas is believed to be “extremely pleased” with how Flagg has conducted himself during the pre-draft process. Team executives have praised his maturity, attention to detail, and ability to adapt to advanced concepts in team workouts.
The combination of physical tools and basketball intellect has long set Flagg apart from his peers, but his demeanor in front of decision-makers has only strengthened his case as a franchise-caliber player.
