Megainvestidor, ‘visionário’: quem é e de onde vem a fortuna do bilionário que negocia compra recorde dos Lakers

Conhecido por investimentos de grande monta no mundo esportivo, como no LA Dodgers, Mark Walter agora negocia assumir o controle de outro gigante americano. O porta-voz do bilionário confirmou que estão em andamento conversas para que a família Buss, atual dona do Los Angeles Lakers, repasse sua participação majoritária na franquia. A imprensa americana afirma que a contrapartida seria de ao menos US$ 10 bilhões (mais de R$ 54 bilhões, na cotação atual), no que configuraria a maior transação de clubes esportivos na História.

Mark Walter é acionista dos Lakers desde 2021, quando comprou 27% de participação ao lado de Todd Boehly. Essa negociação, estimada em US$ 5 bilhões, lhe garantiu o direito de preferência caso a família Buss decidisse vender o clube. Agora, o megainvestidor “está entrando em um acordo para adquirir participações adicionais”, disse o porta-voz.

Walter, de 65 anos, é CEO da empresa de serviços financeiros de investimento e consultoria Guggenheim Partners, com mais de US$ 325 bilhões em ativos. Walter também lidera a holding TWG Global, com sedes em Chicago e Nova York. Mas foi em Los Angeles onde construiu boa parte da carteira de equipes esportivas profissionais. Ele controle desde 2012 o atual campeão da Major League Baseball, Los Angeles Dodgers, e também é sócio do Los Angeles Sparks, da Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA), a liga feminina de basquete dos EUA.

A TWG também é dona da Billie Jean King Cup no tênis feminino e da equipe Cadillac, que está perto de ingressar na Fórmula 1. Walter também fez aportes na liga feminina profissional de hóquei dos EUA. Em outros segmentos, apostou na fabricante de alimentos à base de plantas Beyond Meat e na fornecedora online de carros Carvana, segundo a Forbes, que estima sua fortuna pessoal em US$ 6,1 bilhões (mais de R$ 33 bilhões) — a 585ª pessoa mais rica do mundo nesta quinta-feira.

Os Lakers são a franquia de maior sucesso da NBA ao lado do Boston Celtics. O time foi adquirido em 1979 pelo carismático bilionário Jerry Buss, que rapidamente o transformou em uma potência esportiva e uma marca reconhecida globalmente.

O acordo com os Lakers encerraria 47 anos de controle pela família Buss, embora a atual dirigente, Jeanie Buss, deva permanecer como presidente, de acordo com a imprensa americana.

‘A melhor opção’

A era Buss rendeu aos Lakers 11 títulos, mais do que qualquer outro time no mesmo período, e incluiu eras de ouro, como a do fascinante “Showtime”, liderada na década de 1980 por Earvin “Magic” Johnson, refletida na recente série da HBO, “Winning Time”.

“Mark é a melhor opção e será o melhor guardião da marca Lakers”, disse o próprio “Magic” na rede social X.

“Sei que minha irmã Jeanie [Buss] só teria considerado vender a organização dos Lakers para alguém que conhecesse e em quem confiasse para continuar com o legado de Buss”, disse o ex-armador, que é sócio minoritário dos Dodgers.

“Agora ela pode passar o bastão com confiança para Mark Walter, com quem tem uma verdadeira amizade e em quem pode confiar”, observou. “Ambos são extremamente inteligentes, visionários, grandes líderes e tiveram um impacto positivo na comunidade da Grande Los Angeles”.

Neste século, os Lakers também conquistaram um tricampeonato entre 2000 e 2002 liderado nas quadras pelo falecido Kobe Bryant e por Shaquille O’Neal.

O último dos 17 campeonatos da franquia aconteceu em 2020, com um elenco já liderado por LeBron James.

Os Lakers garantiram a sucessão de “King James”, de 40 anos, após contratar este ano o novo ícone da franquia, o esloveno Luka Doncic.

A negociação entre o clã Buss e Walter acontece poucos meses depois de o Boston Celtics também terem sido vendidos por um valor recorde da liga naquele momento: US$ 6,1 bilhões (R$ 33 bilhões).
