La presión de Estados Unidos para que los aliados europeos aumenten drásticamente su gasto militar va a capitanear la próxima cumbre de la Organización del Tratado del Atlántico Norte (OTAN) que se celebra el 24, 25 y 26 de junio en La Haya, Países Bajos.Estados Unidos ya ha explicado y obligado a que el gasto militar incremente en un 5%, pero España, con Pedro Sánchez, se ha mostrado reacio.
Y este último ha reiterado su intención de cumplir con el objetivo del 2% del PIB en gasto militar fijado por la OTAN en la cumbre de Gales de 2014, el país sigue siendo el miembro de la Alianza que menos invierte en Defensa.
El secretario general de la OTAN, el neerlandés Mark Rutte, ha trasladado a los aliados la propuesta de elevar el umbral de inversión militar hasta el 5% del PIB y ha provocado reticencias en los gobiernos que no están en condiciones políticas o económicas de asumir ese salto presupuestario.
Especialmente España. Ha dejado claro que no suscribirá ese nuevo compromiso en La Haya y eso ha provocado la reacción desde Washington. “Para España, comprometerse a un objetivo del 5% no solo sería irrazonable, sino también contraproducente”, afirma el texto español.
La portavoz de la Casa Blanca, Karoline Leavitt, ha insistido este jueves en que el presidente Donald Trump espera que todos los países europeos, “incluida España”, alcancen el 5 % del PIB en gasto militar, apelando a que esa exigencia es “justa” dado el elevado coste que asumen los contribuyentes estadounidenses para garantizar la defensa común. En rueda de prensa, Leavitt declaró: “Si quieren que EE. UU. nos defienda, primero deben demostrar que invierten lo necesario” y añadió que se encargará de que Trump reciba directamente los comentarios del Gobierno español.
