We’re less than three months away from what its promoters are calling the “fight of the century“. While that moniker may seem hyperbolic, it’s not every day that boxing fans get to see two of the best fighters in history go head-to-head. That’s what they’ll get when Canelo Alvarez and Terence Crawford face each other in Las Vegas on September 13, and it’s sure to be a spectacle.
It’s hard to pick a favorite between the two. Canelo has the advantage of fighting at his usual weight and is the incumbent champion. Crawford comes in with a spotless record and has looked better than Alvarez in his recent outings. That latter point has many fans leaning towards Crawford, but Alvarez has come out to put some doubt into that sentiment.
Canelo vs. Crawford: First Face-Off Lands
Canelo Alvarez: “I have more than just power”
Alvarez and Crawford held a press conference on Friday, with both boxers getting their chances to get things off their chest. Canelo was extremely confident, as has become his trademark, but also cleared up something about his fighting style: he’s more than just a strong puncher.
He’s no Canelo. Obviously been in this situation for a long time and I have the experience. They only focus on my power but I have more than that. And I think this fight is going to be one of my best fights in my history, in my record, and I’m very excited… He’s not going to beat me, don’t worry about it.
Alvarez certainly has plenty of power, which makes his opponents scared to trade blows. That has led to some mundane fights in recent years, including his bouts against William Scull and Jermell Charlo.
Crawford has constantly said he’s willing to go toe to toe with Alvarez, unafraid of trading blows. That seems to be the case with many of Canelo’s opponents, though, and their tune changes once they step into the ring with him. “Bud” is adamant he’s different.

Sixes and a somersault – ‘Great entertainer’ Pant lights up Headingley
Perhaps Rishabh Pant's six off Chris Woakes in the final over of day one was a sign of the fireworks to come on day two at Headingley. When most Test batters would have played for the close, ensured they would still be at the crease the following morning, Pant opted to charge down the wicket and wallop England's Woakes into the stands over deep midwicket. As ever, he thought differently. That eye-popping shot came after a largely sedate knock up to that point with the India vice-captain reining himself as he ushered new skipper Shubman Gill through to a classy century. But Pant expressed himself to the max in the the opening session on Saturday with a swashbuckling, unorthodox display of batting.Sixes, a somersault, the 'falling paddle' as Ravi Shastri coined one audacious shot. So, when the cameras and mics began to disappear, along with the cyclical questions about Indiana’s remarkable trek to the championship round, he welcomed the seclusion from the outside world.AdvertisementMyles Turner, the longest-tenured Pacer, pulled up a chair next to Nesmith.
