Před 14 měsíci při čtvrtfinále ve Stuttgartu byla Sabalenková ještě světovou dvojkou. Stejnou pozici během porážek s Vondroušovou držely Simona Halepová (2× v roce 2019), Naomi Ósakaová (2021) a Uns Džábirová (2023). Celkem už Vondroušová zaznamenala 14 vítězných zápasů proti hráčkám z top 10. Ale s jedničkou to byla premiéra.
Bývaly přitom doby, kdy trávu nesnášela, ale kouč Jan Hernych svou svěřenku přesvědčil, že na zeleném povrchu může rozehrát naplno svou rafinovanou hru plnou fines a nečekaných řešení.
Byla to Vondroušová, která Sabalenkou řezanými míčky nutila k chybám a náběhům na síť, kde pak soupeřku úspěšně přehazovala. Běloruska, jež tradičně své údery doprovází mocným rykem, si nepomohla ani na servisu. První podání umísťovala do kurtu jen v 58 procentech případů, zaznamenala 4 esa, ale taky 4 dvojchyby.
Vondroušová potřebovala na výhru hodinu a 21 minut, zápas zakončila esem a vzájemnou bilanci srovnala na 4:4.
„Hlavně jsem ráda, že zase můžu hrát,“ popisovala 25letá Češka, jež kvůli zranění vynechala tři měsíce z této sezony. Rameno levé ruky má při zápasech zatejpované, ale zátěž zvládá výborně.
„Jsem prostě šťastná, že jsem zase zdravá, a moc vděčná, že můžu hrát takové zápasy. Když jsem viděla startovní pole, řekla jsem si: Okej, tak zkusím uhrát první kolo,“ líčila. A teď je ve finále, svém prvním od vyhraného Wimbledonu.
V neděli odpoledne si Vondroušová zahraje na kurtu Steffi Grafové proti Číňance Wang Sin-jü, která v semifinále vyřadila vítězku turnaje z roku 2021 Ljudmilu Samsonovovou z Ruska.
Berlínské dění tohoto týdne se také odrazilo na prognózách pro travnatý grandslam, který startuje už 30. června. Ještě před pár dny se dalo na celkové vítězství Vondroušové v All England Clubu sázet v kurzu 45:1. V sobotu odpoledne už měla česká hráčka u Tipsportu kurz 10:1 jako Polka Iga Šwiateková a více se věřilo jen triu Coco Gauffová (7:1), Jelena Rybakinová (6,5:1) a Sabalenková (3,9:1).
Vondroušová je nyní až 164. na světě, postupem do finále se však posunula ve virtuálním žebříčku na 101. místo a když v Berlíně přidá titul, skočí na 73. pozici. Ve Wimbledonu ale bude jeho předloňská vítězka znovu velkou hrozbou pro všechny.
