Dillon Gabriel is embracing the mental and physical demands of NFL life amid uncertainty over his future with the Cleveland Browns, as the rookie quarterback fights for his career at the Huntington Bank Field.
While the team continues to evaluate its unusually crowded quarterback room, Gabriel shared a reflective message online suggesting he isn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.
Deion Sanders’ grandson may get a ticket like Shedeur
“Preparing for the next chapter of life. Thanks to @FamilyLeisure for ensuring my mind and body remain sharp all year long. #GoTime,” Dillon posted to Instagram, alongside a photo of himself in a steam room.
He is fighting for his spot against the veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, as well as a fellow rookie in the form of Shedeur Sanders. He also has to contend with Deshaun Watson returning from injury for the 2026/27 NFL season too.
From his perspective, the message wasn’t a cryptic goodbye or trade hint, but rather a personal statement of focus as training intensifies. A rare comment from someone who keeps a low media profile.
The 24-year-old out of the UFC, Oklahoma and Oregon Ducks programs was also recently seen leading drills at the team’s Youth Camp in Berea, taking on the role of a mini offensive coordinator – suggesting increased involvement.
“Drop back. Find him on the first play,” Gabriel instructed a young quarterback. “Everyone! Do what you do.
“Go live. Just ball out, bro…Ballers ball. Let’s go!”
The development comes amid early struggles at minicamp-going 7-of-18 with one touchdown, although he quickly improved and finished with a 48-of-83 completion rate, eight touchdowns, and no interceptions over five open practices, catching the eye of the head coach, Kevin Stefanski.
Could Browns axe Flacco or Pickett?
The Browns‘ current quarterback depth has raised eyebrows across the league and whilst the front office has hinted at the possibility of keeping all four, skepticism is growing as doubters expect one to be traded or cut.
Even Cleveland‘s ex-cornerback, Hanford Dixon, revealed he expects one of the quartet to depart Ohio prior to the start of the 2025/26 NFL season for picks in the 2026 NFL Draft and beyond.
“I think at some point,” Dixon commented. “I think one of these quarterbacks, we’re going to have to maybe trade one of them to someone else to see if we can get some draft picks or something.”
Statistically, Sanders appears to be safe, having posted a 77.4% completion rate with nine touchdowns during minicamp and according to Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot, both Sanders and Gabriel are considered “roster locks.”
That places Flacco and Pickett on uncertain footing as the team evaluates how to allocate spots with time running out to make an impression as carrying four quarterbacks into the season would require cuts elsewhere, most likely on the offensive or defensive line.
Stefanski is reportedly open to the configuration, but the final decision may come down to performance in preseason games and the first test arrives on August 8, when the Browns face the Carolina Panthers.
