První duel hraný v Janově skončil výhrou domácích 2:0. Když stejným poměrem vedla Sampdoria i ve druhém zápase, situace na stadionu v Salernu začala eskalovat. Frustrovaní domácí příznivci házeli na hřiště sedačky, dýmovnice a další předměty. Hra byla po hodině přerušena a oba týmy zamířily do šaten.
K návratu na trávník už ale nedošlo. Na hřiště stále létaly předměty a uklidnění fanoušků nebylo na pořadu dne.

Tím si Sampdoria definitivně pojistila záchranu. Ale celý příběh kolem baráže je podstatně složitější.
Ještě před měsícem to přitom vypadalo, že se Sampdoria stane poprvé v historii třetiligovým klubem. Po konci základní části Serie B skončila až na 18. místě, tedy na první přímé sestupové pozici. Jenže přišel nečekaný zvrat – Brescia byla kvůli finančním nesrovnalostem potrestána odpočtem čtyř bodů, a Sampdoria se tak posunula na 17. příčku zajišťující baráž.
Jenže i to mělo dohru. Původně se měly barážové zápasy odehrát už 19. května, ale kvůli probíhajícímu šetření ohledně Brescie bylo vše odloženo. Až 15. června přišlo na řadu první utkání. Odveta byla naplánována o pět dní později, ale i ta musela být odložena – tentokrát kvůli otravě jídlem v týmu Salernitany, která postihla přes dvacet hráčů a členy realizačního týmu.
Dramatické vyvrcholení přišlo až 22. června. Přes výtržnosti na stadionu a předčasné ukončení zápasu si Sampdoria pojistila setrvání v Serii B.
Pro klub, který má za sebou slavnou minulost včetně vítězství v Poháru vítězů pohárů, mistrovského titulu nebo čtyř triumfů v domácím poháru, by pád do třetí ligy znamenal historické dno.
Takhle může v Janově zůstat aspoň špetka optimismu. Možná právě tato sezona bude začátkem nové etapy, která Sampdorii, kde svoji kariéru v zahraničí odstartoval i Patrik Schick, znovu vrátí mezi italskou elitu.
