The Los Angeles Lakers’ rivals might want to brace themselves. After the team’s first-round playoff exit, head coach J.J. Redick urged his squad to “get in championship shape”-and no one took that call to heart more than Luka Doncic.
The All-Star guard has long faced scrutiny over his conditioning, with some even speculating it factored into the Dallas Mavericks‘ decision to trade him to Los Angeles midseason.
Doncic doesn’t seem fazed. This past season, the Slovenian standout averaged 28.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 7.8 assists on 46.4% shooting. Now, with a serious fitness overhaul, fans and analysts alike are asking: just how scary could a leaner Doncic be?
Luka 2.0 is here
According to The Athletic’s Dan Woike, Doncic completely reshaped his offseason approach, prioritizing conditioning over court time-and the results are showing.
“Doncic has been incredibly committed to his conditioning this offseason,” Woike reported. “He’s dropped significant weight and is following a strict diet and cardio plan, according to a source with knowledge of the program.”
In an uncommon move, Doncic spent nearly a month away from basketball-specific training to focus on his body. Recent photos show a visibly slimmer frame, and he’s now training with the Slovenian national team ahead of this summer’s EuroBasket tournament.
Can anyone stop the new Luka?
Since being drafted third overall in 2018, Doncic has been one of the league’s most dynamic playmakers. Despite speculation that his fitness held the Lakers back during the postseason, his stats tell a different story.
Over five playoff games, Doncic averaged 30.2 points, 7 rebounds, and 5.8 assists-raising the bar when it mattered most. That’s led many to wonder: if no one could stop Luka at his heaviest, what happens now that he’s in peak form?
The rest of the league might soon find out the hard way.
