Angel Reese surpasses Candace Parker record again as Chicago Sky finally halt slide

Angel Reese etched her name deeper into WNBA history during the Chicago Sky’s recent 97-86 victory over the Los Angeles Sparks.

In that game, Reese recorded another dominant double-double, scoring 18 points and grabbing 17 rebounds, officially surpassing Candace Parker to become the second-fastest player in WNBA history to reach 500 points and 500 rebounds – a feat she accomplished in just 38 games. Only Tina Charles achieved this milestone faster.

Reese’s impact since entering the league has been undeniable. During her rookie season, she set franchise and rookie records for rebounds (446) and double-doubles (26), demonstrating her elite prowess on the boards and all-around game.

Her outstanding performance earned her a spot on the All-Rookie team as well as an All-Star selection, a rare accomplishment for a first-year player.

Reese also made history as the first rookie to record a double-double in a WNBA All-Star Game, tallying 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Reese shines above team’s struggles

Reese’s latest achievements have firmly established her as one of the league’s brightest young stars.

On the night she broke the record, she also joined Candace Parker, Tina Charles, and Tamika Catchings as the only players in WNBA history to put up at least 15 points, 15 rebounds, five assists, and four steals in a single contest – showcasing her versatility and ability to impact the game in every facet.

Despite Reese’s personal success, the Chicago Sky have struggled throughout the season. They entered the game with a 4-10 record, sitting fifth in the Eastern Conference.

Defensive lapses and turnovers have hampered the team’s performance, culminating in a lopsided 21-point loss to the Phoenix Mercury, where the Sky were unable to contain outside shooting and committed 21 turnovers.

The season has been further complicated by the loss of veteran point guard Courtney Vandersloot, who suffered a torn ACL. Vandersloot’s injury removed the team’s primary playmaker and leader from the court, leaving a void in the Sky’s offensive flow and leadership.

In response, Chicago has leaned heavily on first-year guard Hailey Van Lith and key offseason acquisition Ariel Atkins, acquired via trade in February, to fill the playmaking gap and provide stability during this turbulent period.

Amidst these challenges, Reese has remained a beacon of hope for the franchise. She leads the league in rebounds per game, averaging a remarkable 11.9 boards, and continues to exhibit relentless energy and effort night after night. Her ability to control the glass and contribute across the board has made her indispensable to the Sky.

Chicago given hope despite poor form

Angel Reese’s rapid development and historic milestones signify more than just personal accolades; they highlight her potential as a foundational piece for the Sky’s rebuilding efforts. Her work ethic, combined with a versatile skill set that includes scoring, rebounding, playmaking, and defense, paints the picture of a franchise cornerstone.

The challenges faced by the Sky this season emphasize the importance of Reese’s emergence as a leader on and off the court. As the team navigates injuries, inconsistency, and roster changes, Reese’s performances offer a glimpse into what the future may hold.

Fans and analysts alike are watching closely to see if Reese can elevate not only her own game but also inspire her teammates to rise to a higher level. If she continues on this trajectory, the Sky may yet turn their season around and compete at the highest level in the years to come.

In a league full of talented players, Angel Reese’s blend of skill, determination, and historic accomplishments sets her apart as one of the most exciting young talents in the WNBA today.
