2025 NBA Draft grades: Pick-by-pick analysis for Cooper Flagg, Ace Bailey, all first-round selections

The first round of the 2025 NBA Draft is in the books, and while there were no mysteries at the top -- Duke's Cooper Flagg went No. 1 to the Dallas Mavericks, Rutgers' Dylan Harper flew off the board at No. 2 to the San Antonio Spurs -- the rest of the night delivered plenty of surprises. Ace Bailey, long viewed as the draft's third-best prospect, fell to No. 5 after a puzzling pre-draft process; he ultimately landed with a team he's reportedly reluctant to join.Trade activity added to the drama, as is usually the case during NBA Drafts. The New Orleans Pelicans made one of the night's most questionable moves, giving up a potentially valuable future pick to reach for someone many consider a middling prospect. The Portland Trail Blazers, meanwhile, flipped first-rounders with the Memphis Grizzlies with the Blazers using their […]

2025 NBA Draft winners and losers: Ace Bailey’s plan backfires, Cooper Flagg saves the Mavericks

The first round of the 2025 NBA Draft is complete, and while there was absolutely no surprise at the top -- Cooper Flagg did indeed go to the Dallas Mavericks at No. 1 -- there were plenty of unexpected decisions as the night progressed. It started with Ace Bailey, widely considered to be the third most talented player in the draft, who slipped to No. 5 due to a confusing pre-draft process and wound up with a franchise he reportedly has no interest in playing for. There were also several trades where teams exchanged picks, as there are in every draft, but the New Orleans Pelicans made an extremely strange decision to get rid of a potentially juicy draft pick in order to get a middle-of-the-road prospect. Meanwhile the Portland Trail Blazers swapped first-round picks with the Memphis Grizzlies and […]

Derik Queen might be a star, but the path Joe Dumars and the Pelicans took to get him was a reckless gamble

Derik Queen is an enticing prospect. His skill level on offense is off the charts, and, if you believe he can survive on defense at the next level, you can talk yourself into his star potential. The center out of Maryland has drawn comparisons to players like Alperen Sengun, Boris Diaw, Naz Reid and Julius Randle, and he finished incredibly well around the basket for a guy who doesn't play above the rim. It is not surprising that the New Orleans Pelicans traded up in Wednesday's NBA Draft to get him.The price that Pelicans paid to do so, however, is astounding. New Orleans' new front office, led by Joe Dumars and Troy Weaver, traded an unprotected 2026 first-round pick to the Atlanta Hawks in order to move up from the No. 23 spot and select Queen at No. 13.The Pelicans finished […]

PR failure? Ace Bailey loses game of chicken to be taken by Jazz at No. 5 in NBA Draft

Imagn Images A curious and unpredictable predraft process for one of the 2025 NBA Draft's most talented players ended fittingly in a curious and unpredictable way Wednesday night as Ace Bailey, the Rutgers wing who canceled a meeting with the Philadelphia 76ers (who held pick No. 3) last week and who reportedly was not working out for teams picking in the top five, was selected No. 5 overall by the Utah Jazz. Ace Bailey addresses decision to not work out for teams prior to NBA Draft: 'I'm just working on basketball' Jordan Dajani Bailey did not hold a workout for the Jazz in the lead-up to the draft and preferred Washington, New Orleans or Brooklyn over Utah or Charlotte, according to ESPN. His camp seemingly intentionally sabotaged his stock in an effort to get him out of the top five […]
