Dietrich Enns pitched five scoreless innings in his first major league outing since 2021 as the host Detroit Tigers silenced the Athletics, 8-0, on Thursday afternoon.
Enns, who made nine relief appearances with Tampa Bay four seasons ago before pitching in Japan and Korea, was called up from Triple-A Toledo to make a spot start. He held the Athletics to one hit and two walks while striking out four.
Brenan Hanifee, Tyler Holton, Chase Lee and Will Vest each tossed an inning of scoreless relief.
Gleyber Torres hit a two-run homer and Spencer Torkelson supplied a solo blast. Zach McKinstry and Jahmai Jones drove in two runs apiece.
A’s starter Jeffrey Springs (6-6) gave up three runs in five innings.
The Tigers grabbed the lead in the second on Torkelson’s 17th homer. He drove a Springs changeup over the left-center field wall.
The Athletics had a threat going in the third. Max Schuemann led off with a single and stole second. Denzel Clarke walked but Enns wriggled out of that jam as Jacob Wilson flied out and Brent Rooker bounced into a double play.
Detroit made it 3-0 in the bottom of the inning. Parker Meadows smacked a one-out single and Torres walked. Jones then hit a bouncer past third baseman Max Muncy and both runners came around to score.
McKinstry doubled in the bottom of the fourth and Javier Baez reached on an infield hit. However, McKinstry was picked off second by catcher Austin Wynns.
McKinstry got thrown out running the bases in the sixth. He had a two-out single, stole second and tried to score when Baez reached on an error by Muncy. First baseman Gio Urshela threw McKinstry out at home.
The Tigers stretched their lead to 5-0 in the seventh. Meadows bounced a one-out single into center before Torres hit an opposite-field drive that just cleared the wall for his eighth homer.
Detroit tacked on three more runs in the eighth. Torkelson and Wenceel Perez had consecutive singles before McKinstry slashed a triple down the right-field line. McKinstry scored on Jake Rogers’ sacrifice fly.
