Four-star offensive tackle Deacon Schmitt has officially turned the page on his home-state Colorado Buffaloes, choosing instead to take his talents to Norman. The top-ranked 2026 recruit in the state of Colorado committed to the Oklahoma Sooners on Saturday, ending a tense recruiting battle that included blueblood Alabama and hometown favorite Colorado.
Schmitt, a 6-foot-5, 310-pound lineman out of Windsor High School, made his announcement during a livestream from his school gymnasium. Moments after thanking his family and coaches, the towering tackle grinned and pulled out an Oklahoma hat before delivering a message Sooners fans are loving and Buffaloes fans likely won’t forget anytime soon.
“Boomer Sooner. Horns down, baby. Let’s go,” he said, according to Athlon Sports.
With that declaration, Schmitt handed Coach Deion Sanders and the Colorado Buffaloes one of their most painful recruiting blows of the 2026 cycle.
Despite Colorado’s continued momentum in national media and recruiting circles, Schmitt’s decision underscores just how difficult it remains to keep top talent home, especially when storied programs like Oklahoma and Alabama come calling.
Schmitt says he’s long known Oklahoma was the choice
While the timing of the announcement created drama, Schmitt admitted that the decision had been brewing for quite some time.
“I’ve known for a bit,” he said, referring to Oklahoma as his eventual choice. The Sooners originally extended an offer to the elite lineman on June 26, 2023, nearly one year to the day of his commitment.
It wasn’t just the program’s pedigree that drew him in. Schmitt pointed to his bond with the current Oklahoma coaching staff as a major reason behind the commitment. Specifically, he cited head coach Brent Venables for creating an environment that felt like family.
He praised Venables’ energy and leadership, saying the culture reminded him of what he experiences with his Windsor coaching staff. The Sooners’ emphasis on unity and toughness resonated with him – and so did their quarterback plans.
Schmitt emphasized that part of the appeal was protecting four-star quarterback Bowe Bentley, another key Oklahoma commit in the 2026 class.
“That’s my guy,” Schmitt told reporters following the announcement.
He also spoke highly of offensive line coach Bill Bedenbaugh, calling him “the best offensive line coach in college football” and lauding both his demanding nature and unwavering support for his players. That combination, according to Schmitt, was critical in choosing where to develop over the next several years.
Coach Prime and the Buffaloes had made a strong pitch, especially with the local angle, but it wasn’t enough to keep Schmitt in the Centennial State. Alabama made a late push with an official visit, but the long-standing connection with Oklahoma ultimately proved too strong to overcome.
