After speculation over who will fill the Cleveland Browns QB1 job, the controversy continues to grow.
With Deshaun Watson – the 2024 starter – recovering from his Achilles injury, the team will have to make a difficult decision on who will fill the starting quarterback job.
Deion Sanders Jr’s flex didn’t impress as fans say his “luxury” is more common than he thinks
During the 2025 NFL Draft, Browns selected Dillon Gabriel with the 94th pick and Shedeur Sanders with the 144th pick, and they are joined by veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett, who were already with the team. And while all have demonstrated their skills and strengths, the Browns have no clear starter at the moment and all four candidates take turns completing their workouts.
With eyes on Kevin Stefanski‘s decision after training camp at the end of this summer, Watson has stolen the spotlight.
Watson takes the opportunity to help Sanders
While watching from the bench, Deshaun has missed no opportunity to support and guide them along the way, as noted by Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com. Even at OTAs and minicamp, Watson is noted for his camaraderie “inside the quarterback room and meeting rooms, and has been a great cheerleader for the four quarterbacks vying for the starting job,” Cabot wrote.
Watson also seems to have taken a liking to former Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders, whom he has taken “under his wing to help him come up the learning curve quickly, and it’s been working,” Cabot said.
Perhaps he’s seen more potential in him than anyone else on the team, or maybe it’s to return the favor and support when his father, Deion Sanders backed him after he went down Oct. 20 against the Cincinnati Bengals because of his Achilles tendon. Fans started cheering and Coach Prime came to his defense.
This tutelage by Watson over Shedeur could be more advantageous for the young quarterback who has recently been in the news for reckless driving behaviors and not for his performance on the field. Only time will tell if Deshaun’s advice and Sanders’ talent will be enough to be the next Browns QB1.
