NHL a její hráčská asociace NHLPA ve čtvrtek oficiálně oznámily návrat Světového poháru s tím, že se jej zúčastní osm reprezentací. Nebude se tedy jednat o žádné složené mančafty Evropy či Severní Ameriky do 23 let jako na posledním turnaji před devíti lety.
Zámořská liga uvedla, že nyní bude následovat výběr pořadatelských měst, kde se světový pohár uskuteční. Hrát by se tedy mělo i v Evropě, podobně jako tomu bylo v roce 2004. Hokejové svazy starého kontinentu mají čas na přihlášky až do konce července. A právě o toto pořadatelství by Rusové měli zájem.
„Tento turnaj nabízí městům šanci zúčastnit se něčeho celosvětového a zároveň obdržet smysluplné ekonomické a kulturní benefity,“ je přesvědčen komisionář NHL Gary Bettman. NHL by bez debat uvítala návrat Rusů do mezinárodního hokeje, protože mezi hvězdy zámořské ligy patří řada tamních hokejistů.
Jedním z nich je i brankář New Yorku Rangers Igor Šesťorkin. „Bylo by skvělé znovu sdílet šatnu s kluky z Ruska. Národní tým mi chybí. Máme svou kulturu, emoce. Doufám, že se zase brzy na nějakém turnaji potkáme,“ uvedl pro Sport-Express.
