Světová pětka v utkání nabrala dvousetové manko, na drtivě servírujícího Francouze totiž nestačila ve dvou tie-breacích. Ve třetím dějství Fritz konečně získal kýžený brejk, jenže čtvrtá sada dospěla znovu do zkrácené hry, kde Američan ztrácel už 1:5.
Proti takovému kanonu na servisu téměř neřešitelný problém. Mpetshi Perricard, 36. hráč světového žebříčku, nasázel 37 es a jeden ze servisů napálil rychlostí 246 km/h. Na nejslavnějším turnaji tak výrazně překonal rekord Taylora Denta z roku 2010, jenž měl hodnotu 238 km/hod.
Fritzovi se ovšem podařilo tie-break otočit a vybojovat rozhodující pátou sadu.
V tu chvíli ukazovaly hodiny v Londýně 22:20. Podle wimbledonských tradic se může hrát do 23:00. Přestože zbývalo 40 minut, duel byl k nelibosti Američana přerušen. Bučeli i diváci. „Vůbec se nedivím, že už nechtěl hrát,“ komentoval Francouzovo přání Fritz. „Čemu ale vůbec nerozumím jsou pořadatelé. Jasně jsem jim řekl: O. k., pojďme hrát do stavu 5:5, a pokud se nedočkáme brejku, tak dohrajeme zítra,“ nabízel svůj pohled Američan.
Pravidla říkají, že pokud se soupeři neshodnou, ať už na pokračování, nebo přerušení utkání, pak je definitivní verdikt na organizátorech.
A nutno přiznat, že pravdu měl právě vytočený Fritz. Posuďte sami. První dvě sady, které došly až do zkrácených her, trvaly 45 resp. 50 minut. Do třičtvrtě hodiny se vešel i čtvrtý set. Jediná sada, kde se nehrál tie-break trvala pouze 33 minut. Šance stihnout zápas dohrát tak rozhodně byla.
Však i portugalský expert José Morgado neskrýval rozladění z verdiktu organizátorů. „Cože? Byla tu dobrá šance zápas dohrát. Tohle je nesmysl. Fritz je naštvaný, diváci taky. A právem.“

„Respektuji pravidla, ale dalo se to stihnout včera, a kdyby ne, přerušit se dalo za stavu 5:5. I pro diváky by to bylo jistě lepší řešení,“ pravil Fritz po dovršení velkého obratu.
„Jde hlavně o to, že musíte držet koncentraci i další den. Máte mít volno a najednou jdete na dohrávku, která se mohla stihnout o den dřív. Navíc nevíte, kdy přesně začne, protože se před ní hrají jiné zápasy. Tohle je špatně,“ lamentoval loňský čtvrtfinalista turnaje, jehož ve druhém kole čeká již za pár hodin Kanaďan Diallo.
