Delvecchio strávil celou svou hráčskou kariéru v NHL v Detroitu. Mezi lety 1951 až 1973 odehrál v základní části 1549 utkání (456+825), 12 sezon působil jako kapitán. Víc zápasů za Rudá křídla nasbírali jen jeho spoluhráč z útoku legendární Gordie Howe (1687) a obránce Nicklas Lidström (1564). Ve 104 utkáních play off přidal 35 gólů a 69 asistencí.
Delvecchio zemřel ve svém domě v Rochesteru ve státě Michigan. Rodina v oficiálním prohlášení vydaném klubem uvedla, že rodák z Fort William skonal pokojně obklopen svými nejbližšími.
„Alex nebyl jen hokejovou ikonou. Byl oddaným manželem, milujícím otcem, skvělým dědečkem, drahým přítelem a pro mnohé respektovaným spoluhráčem. Ačkoli ho svět znal jako neuvěřitelného hokejistu s mnoha úspěchy na ledě, my jsme ho znali jako člověka, jehož pokora, síla, soutěživost, laskavost a srdce byly ještě větší než jeho známé úspěchy,“ píše rodina.
Delvecchio získal s Detroitem Stanley Cup v letech 1952, 1954 a 1955. Třikrát obdržel Lady Byng Trophy pro největšího gentlemana NHL. Po konci hráčské kariéry vedl Red Wings opakovaně jako trenér i generální manažer. V roce 1977 byl uveden do Síně slávy NHL a jeho číslo 10 Detroit vyřadil z užívání. V roce 2017 byl vybrán mezi 100 nejlepších hráčů v dějinách NHL.
