Finalista loňského US Open Fritz si v All England Clubu zahrál čtvrtfinále potřetí, dál se ale dosud nedostal. V letošní přípravě na travnatou sezonu však zářil a slavil tituly ve Stuttgartu a Eastbourne.
Proti Chačanovovi získal hladce úvodní dva sety, v nichž při svém podání ztratil jen sedm fiftýnů. Ve třetím ale převzal taktovku Rus, odskočil do vedení 5:0 a vynutil si další set.
Čtvrtou sadu, před níž si Fritz vyžádal ošetření pravé nohy, museli hráči rozehrát nadvakrát poté, co Američan podával na 15:0. Při následné výměně se ozval zvuk, který zněl jako hlášení autu elektronického systému. Rozhodčí na umpiru hru přerušila a poté nařídila výměnu opakovat kvůli poruše. Set nakonec dospěl do tie-breaku, který Fritz získal 7:4.
