Horner vedl rakouskou stáj od jejího vstupu do šampionátu formule 1 v roce 2005. Pod jeho působením vyhrál Red Bull šest Pohárů konstruktérů. Sebastian Vettel a Max Verstappen přidali každý čtyři tituly mistra světa. Letos však stáj pomalu ale jistě vypadává ze soubojů o obě trofeje. Po polovině sezony je Red Bull v Poháru konstruktérů na čtvrtém místě. Verstappen je v jednotlivcích třetí s mankem 61 bodů na druhého Norrise a dalších osmi na vedoucího Piastriho.
Právě zklamání z průběhu aktuální sezony by mělo být hlavním důvodem pro konec Angličana ve funkci. Kromě oficiálního šéfa stáje působil Horner i jako předseda technického a motorového úseku a také marketingové divize.
Přesto, že smlouvu měl podepsanou až do roku 2030, bylo rozhodnuto, že s okamžitou platností opustí Horner organizaci. Za rozhodnutím stojí podle Bildu sportovní šéf skupiny Red Bull Oliver Mintzlaff. Informováni o něm měli být majitelé Chalerm Yoovidhya a Mark Mateschitz, stejně jako poradce Red Bullu pro motorsport Helmut Marko. Všichni mají vyhazov Hornera podporovat.

Horner má za sebou těžký rok. Kromě nevydařené obhajoby Poháru konstruktérů v roce 2024 se musel vypořádat i s osobními problémy. Loni byl obviněn z nevhodného chování k jedné ze zaměstnankyň stáje. Sám je přitom ženatý s Geri Halliwellovou, bývalou členkou Spice Girls. Přestože byl po interním vyšetřování komise dvakrát zproštěn obžaloby, dostane se případ na začátku příštího roku k soudu a to by mohlo ve spojení se značkou Red Bull přinést další nevyžádanou pozornost.

Čas ukáže, jak výměna šéfa stáje ovlivní Red Bull a také jeho hlavní jezdeckou hvězdu Verstappena. Už nějakou dobu se čile spekuluje o možnosti, že by od následující sezony mohl čtyřnásobný mistr světa jezdit za jednoho z konkurentů. Nejčastěji bývají zmiňovány týmy Aston Martin a Mercedes, s jehož šéfem Toto Wolffem má Verstappen vyjednávat.
