Joe Flacco’s return to the Cleveland Browns came with a clear message: he’s here to play, not to play teacher.
At 40, Flacco isn’t interested in framing his comeback as a mentorship tour. When asked about guiding rookies like Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel, he kept it blunt: “I’m not a mentor. I play football.” But inside the locker room, that quote is being received differently.
Joel Bitonio, one of the Browns’ most respected veterans, says Flacco’s leadership doesn’t come with speeches or slogans – it shows up in how he operates day-to-day. “Despite what you’ve read, he’s been working with the younger guys. It’s just the way he carries himself,”Bitonio told Barry Shuck from Dawgs by Nature.
Flacco may not be pulling rookies aside for chalk talks, but his presence is having an impact.

Both Sanders and Gabriel arrived in Cleveland with eyes on their development. And even if Flacco isn’t actively mentoring, Bitonio says the rookies are absorbing plenty just by being in the room.
During minicamp, Bitonio got a firsthand look at what the future might hold. “I saw Dillon step up and make a real NFL throw. And Shedeur? He fired into a tight window – that’s big-league stuff,” he said.
Still, consistency remains the name of the game. Neither rookie is expected to start right away, but the flashes are there. And they’re learning in a room filled with experience – from Deshaun Watson’s highs and lows, to Kenny Pickett’s grind, to Flacco’s deep NFL résumé.
Hall of Famer Cris Carter said on The Carton Show that starting Flacco all year would be “a huge problem” for Cleveland. But for now, the team is treating that veteran presence as an asset, not a liability – especially if it’s accelerating the development of their rookie QBs.
Flacco won’t call himself a mentor. And maybe he doesn’t need to. Because according to those watching closely, he’s already doing the job – just without the title.
