Die DHB-Auswahl unterliegt vor den Augen der Frauen-Nationalmannschaft, die kurz zuvor das Viertelfinale klargemacht hatte, am Donnerstagabend Weltmeister Kroatien mit 1:2 (20:26, 22:13, 8:10). Das Gute: Die Viertelfinalteilnahme ist ihnen trotzdem nicht mehr zu nehmen.

Gegen Kroatien geht der erste Satz in die Hose – 20:26. Irre: Lucian Bura (27) macht die ersten zehn Punkte für Kroatien im Alleingang. Ihn bekommt die DHB-Defensive in Satz eins überhaupt nicht in den Griff, Bura macht 16 der 26 kroatischen Punkte.
Im zweiten Satz (so nennen sich die beiden Halbzeiten im Beachhandball) dann ein komplett anderes Bild. Deutschland vorne plötzlich konsequent und Kroatien nachlässig bei der Chancenverwertung. Kroatiens Bura macht nur noch drei weitere Punkte.

Nach fünf Minuten führen die deutschen Beach-Boys mit 12:5. Geht da noch was? Ja! Deutschland holt sich den Durchgang klar und erzwingt das Shootout.

Jede Mannschaft muss dabei fünf Werfer bestimmen. Die werden mit einem langen Pass aus dem Torraum bedient und müssen auf der anderen Seite gegen den Torhüter den Ball versenken. Die ersten vier Schützen auf beiden Seiten treffen alle. Kroatien legt mit dem fünften Schützen vor. Dann ist es ausgerechnet Deutschlands bisheriger Topscorer Lars Zelser, der als allerletzter Schütze an Kroaten-Keeper Filip Dominik Hancic scheitert – bitter!
