Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, son of the legendary former Mexican boxing champion, was arrested on July 2 in Studio City, California, by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents. The arrest occurred after the fight against Jake Paul where he lost. The arrest warrant is still in force in Mexico and is for accusations of alleged links with the Sinaloa Cartel.
According to information from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the junior is in the process of being deported and has been classified as a “threat to public safety”. This situation is under review because he entered the country with an expired visa and his connection to the cartel is through his wife Frida Munoz, who is the partner of one of Chapo Guzman’s sons.
Julio César Chávez Jr. was arrested in California for alleged affiliation with the Sinaloa Cartel
What did Julio Cesar Chavez Jr do for the Sinaloa Cartel, according to the FGR?
The Attorney General’s Office (FGR) links the boxer directly to Nestor Ernesto Perez Salas, aka “El Nini”, alleged security chief of the Sinaloa Cartel. This is due to telephone calls recorded between December 2021 and June 2022 that place him in situations of violence.
According to reports from the FGR, “El Nini” had ordered members of rival groups to be physically punished, who were tied up and hung like a punching bag and were beaten by JC Chavez, so he would be an active collaborator in intimidation operations of the criminal group.
Why does JC Chavez’s legal and immigration history worsen his situation in the United States?
Chavez Jr’s situation has antecedents such as his entry into the United States in 2023 with a legal visa, but it expired in 2024 and he applied for permanent residence after marrying Frida Munoz, who had a relationship with Edgar Guzman and the authorities consider this connection in the evaluation of his immigration profile.
In addition, the former champion faces criminal records for driving under the influence of alcohol in 2012 and January 2024 and a conviction for possession of weapons, despite this situation he managed to enter the United States in 2025 for his fight against Jake Paul and is now being investigated by DHS and ICE.
