Did the NBA gift Dallas a star? Mavericks’ longshot win fuels familiar fire

It took less than five minutes for the conspiracy theories to start flying. When the Dallas Mavericks jumped from a 1.8% chance to the No. 1 overall pick in Monday night’s NBA Draft Lottery, fans didn’t celebrate. They speculated. Social media lit up with everything from “rigged” memes to jokes about how GM Nico Harrisonmight be working magic behind the scenes.

And to be fair, the timing is surreal.

Analyzing Pritchard’s Impact and Knicks’ Defensive Woes

Just three months ago, Dallas traded away Luka Doncic to the Lakers in a move that sent shockwaves through the league. It was a pivot few saw coming. Now, with the team holding the top pick and a clear path to selecting Duke phenom Cooper Flagg, fans can’t help but raise eyebrows.

“I’ve been through this before”: Rick Welts breaks silence on conspiracy Talk

Enter Rick Welts, Mavericks CEO-and a man who’s been here before, quite literally. Back in 1985, Welts was in charge of the very first NBA Draft Lottery, the same one where the Knicks landed Patrick Ewing and set the gold standard for lottery-related conspiracies. Now, forty years later, he’s watching the same narrative unfold, this time with his own team in the spotlight.

“I’m the only person who was in this room and the room 40 years ago,” Welts told The Washington Post’s Ben Golliver. “I was in charge of the NBA draft lottery 40 years ago when Patrick Ewing won. I’ve been doing conspiracy theory stories ever since. This is very surreal, personally.”

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also stepped in to defend the league’s process, reiterating that independent auditors and strict procedures ensure integrity every year. Similar statements were made after the controversial 2023 Spurs win, when they selected Victor Wembanyama.

But let’s be real: no amount of protocol is going to stop fans from questioning a lottery system that always seems to deliver drama.

Whether you’re buying the conspiracy or just enjoying the chaos, one thing’s clear: the Mavericks are suddenly sitting in a powerful position. If they take Flagg, as nearly every draft expert-including ESPN’s Jonathan Givony-predicts, Dallas may have found its next franchise cornerstone. And if that happens? The noise probably won’t stop anytime soon.

Pau Torres vs Tyrone Mings: An Aston Villa culture clash

Aston Villa’s competition in central defence has crossed into a cultural footballing debate. Subject of choice: Tyrone Mings or Pau Torres? The talking point represents two factions of sound logic among fans. The battle between a defence-first central defender — suitably capable in possession but bases his game on leadership, duels and dutifully manning his box — and the more languid, highly progressive quarterback; good but occasionally fragile defensively.AdvertisementCombining Mings and Torres would make for one of the world’s most complete players. In an era when building from the back seems a prerequisite, Torres fits the mould. To those who prefer their defender to mainly focus on solidifying the back line, Mings gets the nod.In turn, a clash in ideology is provoked. Data has long shown Torres to be among Europe’s best in possession, ranking in the top eight per cent […]

Johnson, Solanke and Richarlison could be about to do the one thing Kane never could

So much of the discussion about Tottenham Hotspur gets magnetised towards the issue of the manager that it can occlude the even bigger questions. Whatever view you might take on Ange Postecoglou — we will take a day off from the two sides of that argument here — no one can fully explain what has happened to Spurs in the last two years by looking at Postecoglou alone.AdvertisementThe most important thing that happened to Tottenham in 2023 was not the arrival of Postecoglou, for better or worse. It was the departure of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich, Spurs’ all-time record goalscorer and arguably their greatest ever player. Kane was synonymous with Tottenham and had spent nine years driving the team forward with mountains of goals and assists. You could even argue that the second-most important thing to happen to Tottenham in […]

‘The numbers are ugly’: Justin Turner walks off Marlins as he tries to shake early slump

CHICAGO — Tuesday night was supposed to be about youngster Moisés Ballesteros making his MLB debut. The 21-year-old designated hitter and catcher was called up after Ian Happ was placed on the injured list with a left oblique strain. An offense-first player, Ballesteros has mashed in a month-plus at Triple A and earned this promotion.AdvertisementThe choice to call up Ballesteros was also an indictment of the play of veteran Justin Turner so far this season. Turner, signed by the Cubs late in the offseason to a one-year, $6-million deal after their failed pursuit of Alex Bregman, would have been the logical player to get the bulk of the playing time with Seiya Suzuki shifting to Happ’s normal spot in left, opening up the DH role. But Turner entered play on Tuesday with a 35 wRC+ and had yet to deliver […]

Analysing Chelsea’s No 9 options in the absence of the suspended Nicolas Jackson

Nicolas Jackson’s arm-raising moment of madness against Newcastle defender Sven Botman on Sunday has plunged Enzo Maresca back into the attacking crisis he faced in February, in the midst of a slump that almost derailed Chelsea’s season.“Sometimes I think you need to play games without players to realise how important they are,” Maresca said in his press conference after Chelsea lost 2-1 away to Brighton in the FA Cup fourth round without Jackson, who had been sidelined with a hamstring injury picked up in a home win over West Ham five days earlier.AdvertisementStarting with Cole Palmer and Christopher Nkunku as dual false nines at the Amex Stadium, Chelsea lacked a consistent penalty-box presence or a reliable means to stretch the opposition defence. These problems became even more pronounced when Brighton triumphed 3-0 in the Premier League meeting between the two […]
